Dear Marilo: Leaving the body at will is considered one of the occult powers that can be obtained from the practice of yoga/meditation, but the occult powers are also considered to be the greatest stumbling blocks in the path to truth. Certainly, interest in such things is a reason that people get involved in this kind of work, but as Yogi Bhajan puts it, these are "glitter at the bottom of the ladder". Sri Ramakrishna more bluntly describes them as "heaps of rubbish". However, if this is truly what you wish, I'm sure you will find a teacher who will accomodate you. There are paths, quite divergent from traditional yogic paths, which specialize in this. For example, the Monroe Institute is quite literally a school for learning to leave the body to travel on this and other planes. To get an overview of the traditional path of yoga, I'd suggest "The Yoga Aphorisms of Patanjali" - my favorite translation (in English) is by Swami Prabhavananda and Christopher Isherwood. You can find out more about Robert Monroe from books such as "Journeys out of the body". A good website for exploring a wide panorama of spiritual paths is www.spiritweb.org. Blessings on your path, Sadhant Singh
Guest guest
I personally (not that I am anything but an ordinary person) think that having OBE's helps you on the path. Look at people like Robert Monroe and Robert Bruce (www.tower.net.au/~rsb). It seems what they have learned from having them is the same as what people who have attained high yogic states teach. This is just my opinion though... It seems what they have learned from > having them is the same as what people who have attained high yogic states Of course it is difficult to know what somebody has learned from any given experience(s). But I've read several of Monroe's books, and I must say that I find what he says to be shallow - even trivial - by comparison with, for example, Neale Donald Walsch ("Conversations with God" or Ken Wilber ("Sex, Ecology, and Spirituality"), let alone the vast breadth of a Sai Baba or our own Yogi Bhajan. I feel from what I've learned that the essence of why the various traditions and teachers warn people away from chasing the occult powers is two-fold. First of all, the attainment of such powers has a tendency to enhance what is known as spiritual ego ("I'm so spiritual because I can do (whatever)", and that attitude is obviously a serious stumbling block to one's own development, one of the keys to which is humility. And secondly, the use of such powers, without a truly Christ-like consciousness, carries significant karmic repercussion, beyond the karmic consequence of normal activities and attitudes. I quote Patanjali's warning: "They are powers in the wordly state, but they are obstacles to samadhi". Occult powers are much less special than certain books or teachers might have one think, of course. Everyone is more or less capable of exercising such powers, given the right training and practice, and many people are capable of exercising them without any training or practice at all.
