Guest guest
Not a long time ago we had a discussion with other teachers about the length of this kriya in its reduced time of 11/12 (?) minutes. It is said that you must chant the mantra Sa Ta Na Ma loud for a certain time, whisper it for the same amount of time, think it for a double amount of time and then again whisper and loud chanting. In its reduced form of 11 minutes, this appears to be impossible: if you chant loud for 2 minutes, you have to whisper for 2 minutes and think it for 4. Then again 2 minutes whisper and 2 minutes loud. This makes 12 minutes. Nobody seemed to know exactly if this is acceptable or if we are supposed to reduce the 2 minute time to some 1,45 or so. I'm aware that for many it could sound as a silly detail. However, Yogi B. said that we should meditate for 11, 31 or 62 minutes... and not for approximately 10, half an hour or one hour... So, it is probably more important that what it appears at first sight. Thank you to those who have something to add to this point! sat sarbat kaur
Guest guest
Hi Sat Sarbat! (Been saving up questions for a while? I simply assumed, as YB has said, that we should try to hit 11 exactly, so I've been using 4 minutes silent and 1:45 for the other parts. My teacher taught me a great sadhana (which I wrote you about "off-line") which includes 11 minutes of Kirtan. I will see him tonight, and I'll ask if he has asked Gurucharan, from whom he got this idea for sadhana, about this point. If anyone is interested, the idea is to alternate doing the sadhana chants one day and the other day doing 31 minutes of Sat Kriya, 11 minutes of Kirtan Kriya, and 31 Sodarshan Chakra Kriya (1 day peace, one day power!). I've been doing this sadhana for almost 40 days now, and it is wonderful!!! Much joy! Sadhant

Wouldn't I benefit from a meditation no matter what the time was? Sat nam, Angie
Guest guest
Sat Nam Angie: Of course you will have benefits from meditating for any length of time. However, the experience of many practitioners over thousands of years tells us that specific durations work on us at different levels - you will get effects from an 11-minute meditation that you simply won't get from repeating the same meditation for 3 minutes 4 (or even 40) times. On a related subject, just because a meditation specifies 31 minutes doesn't mean you should necessarily start there. KY specifies a particular set of optimal meditation durations: 3, 5, 7, 11, 15, 22, 31, 62, or 1 1/2 or 2 1/2 hours. We recommend that you use these intervals as you work your way up, doing only what is comfortable for you at the time. Every meditation is different, and works on you in different ways. There are meditations that are specified to be done for no more than 11 minutes, and others that have no time limits at all.
