Counting with Mala beads

Today I started a 40 day mantra along with a cleansing diet and am using the

eleven minute guidelines that were posted below:

2 minutes- outloud

2 minutes-whisper

3 minutes-silent

2-minutes- whisper

2-minutes- outloud

I want to use my 108 count mala beads during this mantra and divided the count

of the beads like this...to equal 108

2- minutes outloud- 21 beads

2 minutes whisper-21 beads

3- minutes silent- 24 beads

2- minutes whisper- 21 beads

2-minutes outloud- 21 beads

I am asking if this numerical division will work okay, or if there is a better

numerical way to divide this... also does anyone have count times for the 2 1/2

hours of mantra and meditation?

Sincerely Qetesh

Sat Nam Qetesh:

I don't use mala beads myself (I use several different timers on

meditations like Kirtan Kriya), so forgive any misunderstandings I

might have. From a strictly mathematical perspective, I would think

that a division along these lines would more accurately reflect the

time ratio of the meditation:

2 - 19

2 - 19

3 - 32

2 - 19

2 - 19

(Since 11 doesn't divide evenly into 108, we have "rounding error")

However, wouldn't this depend on your own personal "per-bead" speed?

That is, rather than trying to fit 11 minutes to 108 beads, would it

not make more sense to know how many beads you move per minute, and

then multiply that by 2, or 3 (or 31 or 150, etc.)?

Blessings (and enjoy your 40-day set - they are always worth it!)

Sat Nam Qetesh!

Just a little contribution more on Malas.

One very important thing while meditating with Malas is that you

shouldn't pass over the Guru bead (this is the biggest stone or the

silver/golden/wooden piece before the silk part). This means that when

you reach the last bead before it, you must turn the Mala and start

again (thus starting again from the last bead you meditated with).

If you respect this rule, the rest is very open:

You can either meditate making up your own wish/pray, choosing your

mantra and deciding how many times you want to go through your Mala (one

time/108, two times/216 etc.).

Or you can choose - as in your case - to do a given meditation for 11,

31 minutes, 2 1/2 hours... In this case you should rather stick to the

minutes and are allowed to stop wherever you are when time is out. So,

it is not important if you make exactly 108, or less or more than that.

Try it, you will have one thing less to control!

Hope this helps you.

Bless you,

Sat Sarbat Kaur
