For Sadhant, re. Five Tibetans

Dear Sadhant,

I was rather worried/concerned when I read your posting about a teacher

making you do 26 repetitions of the Five Tibetan Rites series right away. I

have been practicing them (albeit somewhat inconsistently) for nearly two

years. According to the book (The Ancient Secret of the Fountain of Youth,

by Peter Kelder, available from amazon.com) that I learned these exercises

from, and from the companion video, it is clearly stressed that one should

work up gradually - I repeat, very gradually - to 21 repetitions. For

example, starting with 3 repetitions of each Rite, then 5, then adding a

couple more, until reaching the full 21. At first I thought I was a

hot-shot, having practiced hatha yoga for a few years, thinking, heck, I can

go ahead and do all 21! Not so. I had a VERY strange reaction after doing

all Five Rites, 21 times. I felt spaced out and very odd for nearly 48

hours afterwards. I could only suspect that my chakras had been overly

revved up before they were ready for this. Even now, I can usually only do

15 to 18 repetitions comfortably.

About the dizziness in the spins, a little trick is to focus your gaze

(while spinning around) on your right fingertips. Then, when you come out

of the spin (which can be slow or fast, whatever works for you), while still

standing, immediately put your hands in front of your eyes in Namaste and

stare at your thumbs. It reduces the residual dizziness very nicely. Works

every time.

Changing the subject, several of you have mentioned Gurmukh's new book, The

Eight Human Talents. I am halfway through it and it is a joy and

inspiration to read. The explanations are clear, simple and very

understandable, and Gurmukh's warmth, candor and honesty shine on every

page. For someone like me who is brand-new to KY, it is a wonderful

introduction. I have not yet read our esteemed instructor Gururattan's

books but I am sure they are just as beautiful and inspiring!

(Sorry this posting was a bit long - I will try to be more brief in future!)

Sincerely,

Inti

Dear Inti:

I appreciate your concern, and your posting. I wonder if the kriya

is actually the same, as I was the only person in the class who had

any problem - however, we were all intermediate-level KY students.

Because of my experience, I have taught the kriya at the level of 13

repetitions to my intermediate-level class (nobody seemed to be

bothered by it). Still, caution is always good :)

Thanks for the tip about the eye focus - my teacher taught us to use

the dancer's trick of spotting, but I suspect your technique will be

more effective.

Blessings,

Sadhant
