Dear m-c:

I assume you saw Gururattan's post about chanting Akaaaal.

Another thing to consider as a vegetarian is proper nutrition -

complete protein is an issue for us veggie types (rather than

sufficient protein, which really isn't a big deal). Make sure you

get grains and legumes every day - together they provide a complete

protein source. Soy is a particularly good protein source, as are

nuts and seeds.

Variety in your diet is important - there are certain things that are

more difficult to get as a veggie eater (particularly with little

dairy), although if you are getting whole grains, legumes, nuts &

seeds for the protein, you'll also pick up a fair amount of these:

Vitamin B-12 and D, calcium, zinc, iron.

Here is a pointer to a web site that will answer many questions about

nutrition:

On kidneys "...the biggest insult to the kidneys is failure to drink

enough water". The idea of drinking at least 8 cups of water a day

is an ancient yogic teaching, and is particularly important when

practicing yoga, since this stimulates the release of toxins.

Yogi Bhajan has several recommendations to help the kidneys - drink

lots of hot water when you wake up. Twice a day, drink 1 cup of mik

with 4 cups of water and a little honey. Several foods are suggested

to help the kidneys eliminate: pineapple, watercress, coconut, rice.

BTW, basmatic rice is recommended over other forms, as it is far more

digestible than brown rice, while still unmilled so it contains the

nutrients lost in the creation of white rice.

Love & blessings,

Sadhant

Dear m-c,

You should consider visiting a naturopath. The first thing they advise,

for new vegetarians, is a cleansing diet to get rid of accumulated

toxins. In the beginning there are some food you should avoid, like red

beans, tomatoes and bananas. If you have pain in the kidneys area,

probably you have kidney inflammation or kidney stones ( I strongly

recommend visit the naturopath). There are two kidney remedies that have

worked for me in the past. One is "horsetail grass tea". This is a

diuretic and kidney purifier. You can get it in any health food store.

It comes in covenient individual bags. Boil 8 ounces of water and drop

one tea bag in it. Let it steep for about five minutes and then remove

the bag. Add brown sugar if you like. Take four cups (8 oz.) during the

day for one month (maybe less depending on progress). You will start to

feel the benefits in about 3 to 7 days. You will feel the urge to

urinate very often, so drink lots of purified (reverse osmosis or

destilled) water during the day. The other thing that complements this

treatment is the cat/cow exercise. Do this every morning (drink your tea

first) or add it to your daily sadhana. There are some good kriyas for

the kidneys in Gururattan's books (e.g. Relax and Renew, etc.), but if

you have pain they will be difficult to do. Better try to aleviate the

pain first and then do the kriyas as maintenance. I hope this will help

you. Sat Nam.
