Guest guest
Dear Sangeet Kaur, I lived in Bolivia for over 5 years. I cannot advise you about any meditations or mantras that can help, but from personal experience in the high altitude of La Paz (around 4400 metres above sealevel) and the Altiplano (Andean highlands), please give the following info to your student: 1) First and foremost, for the first 2 to 3 days: drink lots of fluid, eat lightly, and DO NOT do any major effort - even walking can do you in. Just basically sit around and take it easy. I made the mistake the first day I ever arrived: my nieces and nephews wanted to show me the city, so we walked up and down the city seeing the sights. La Paz is like a crooked-shaped bowl between mountains. So some of the streets are steep. Well, that night I ended up in a clinic with an oxygen tube down my nose and throat. Every breath felt like a dagger. 2) The local advice to visitors for the first week is: comer poquito, dormir solito: eat lightly, and sleep alone (ahem...!!). 3) The best remedy for symptoms of high altitude discomfort is a local tea made of coca leaves, called mate de coca. You can get it in a teabag, or the traditional way which is to steep about 5 green leaves in hot water for about 5 minutes, sweeten to taste and drink it. Coca leaves have been used medicinally for thousands of years by the Aymara and Quechua Indians of the Andes region. They relieve high altitude sickness problems, calm the stomach, and act like a mild aspirin. You will be offered it everywhere, at restaurants and private homes. It tastes a bit like chamomille tea. Even babies and children are given this tea for tummy upsets. 4) Any pharmacy can give you "Sorojchi Pills" - these pills also help relieve high altitude problems. They are mild but very, very helpful. My relatives always meet me at the airport with a thermos of mate de coca and a couple Sorojchi pills. Works like a charm. I hope this helps.
