Can anyone provide advice for the relief of pain in the upper back - lower

neck area due to minor nerve/muscle stress? We have been recommending our

friend to perform the Neck Series from Sexuality and Spirituality slowly and

unforced but were interested if the list could provide some feedback and

additional advice.

Thanks and Sat Nam, Joshua & Anya

I would suggest accupunture / pressure method and with plenty of rest and

warm water bath to relax the muscles......general it due to muscle

tightening and slight muscles tear....however it an suggestion....go for

herbal if you are a strict veg........as there is advance herbs pill

available in the market nowadays for this purposes especially for Blood

circulations and specially for Back spine strengtening..Many of us does not

care much about our back....till this happening or back pain especially form

our Kidney point upwards.........or tight neck pain.......sorry to say I was

having this type of experience................finally going to doctor after

doctors or pills after pills.....etc even my meditations (2 - 3 hours to

transfer heat does not help)...and I was lucky to meet this herbish masters

master....and now I am doing my own research and recommending to doing whom

has this kind of pain....so far many has inproved.....hope u are able to get

this kind of doctor around your place........physical health at times we

cannnot depends on spiritual we must go back to see that we are physically

fit also otherwise we cannot practise spiritual meditations simply because

we are not fit physically however both works hand in hand...till we knows

Sat Nam Joshua & Anya!

That is probably a good set to work on - I often get tension in this

area, and I like these things for a warm-up:

Standing up, connecting pinkie tip and thumb tip (buddhi mudra) and

rotating the arms in big backward circles, inhale up, exhale down.

And shoulder rolls (below), cobra, bridge, bow, triangle, eagle pose

(ego-buster) - the best way to release tension is by stressing the

area first.

What is often very helpful with this sort of thing is to stop

regularly during the day to do some exercises - what I do is:

1. Shoulder rolls (either direction, or both): squeeze shoulders

toward each other, rolling them upward, then backward, bringing

shoulderblades together, and then down, so they move in a complete

circle. Move smoothly and inhale as they move up forward (backward)

and up, and exhale as they move backward (forward) and down. 1-3

minutes.

2. Shoulder shrugs. Inhale and squeeze the shoulders up as high as

they go, exhale and simply release them down. 1-3 minutes

An alternate approach is alternating shoulders: inhale the left up,

exhale the right up (dropping the opposite shoulder as the other

comes up). If you do this one, do it on both sides - for example, 1

minute of inhale left, exhale right and 1 minute of inhale right,

exhale left.

Always do at least one shoulder exercise before the neck rolls.

3. Neck rolls. The ideal is to bring the chin to the chest, rotating

smoothly so the ear comes to the shoulder, the back of the head to the

spine, and the other ear to the (other) shoulder (if you can bring

the other ear to the same shoulder you don't need this exercise :) 1-

3 minutes.

Very important: focus on keeping the shoulders relaxed!

Try to inhale as the head moves forward, exhale as the head moves

backward.

Alternate techniques: bring the ear to the shoulder as you inhale,

exhale as you bring the other ear to the other shoulder. Again, do

this in both directions (reversing the breath halfway through).

Or: tilt the head back as far as is comfortable, and rotate your nose

in circles (they can be little teeny circles - do the rotations in

both directions). You may have to move your head at the same time :)

Use a slow, gentle, even, deep breath to help you relax and release

muscle tension.

Going walking is helpful, provided one remembers to let the arms

swing naturally.

Blessings!

Sadhant

Anja and Josh,

What is causing the minor nerve/muscle stress? If it caused by an injury

such as the whipping of the head, heat (as is often recommended) may not be

the answer. When an injured (inflamed) muscle is heated, it expands,

putting pressure on adjacent tissues and bones. In such a case (not

necessarily assuming this is your friend's case), cold packs would reduce

expansions of tissue and pressure.

(Sidenote: the effects of cold and heat on muscles could explain why some

people find it easier to launch into deep yoga postures after a cold shower

than after a warm/hot shower.)

Nina

P.S. Per the request of the moderator, I'm introducing myself: I live in

Asheville, North Carolina, have ramped up my yoga/meditation practice as a

means to work through whiplash injuries (thus the knowledge of cold packs,

etc.), am often challenged by but enjoy practicing yoga and meditation, and

look forward to seeing more from this e-group.
