Guest guest
Will someone please explain the significance of the left and right sides of the body and how that significance informs postures? Thanks! Nina Murrell-Kisner
Guest guest
Sat Nam Nina: > Will someone please explain the significance of the left and right The right side is solar, or masculine, or physical, the left is lunar, feminine, mental. For postures that may be practiced both ways, it is recommended that one becomes equally adept on both sides - therefore, primarily practiced in the way you find more difficult. When both sides feel equally comfortable, women would start with the masculine side, men with the feminine side. Guest guest
Sat Nam . Using your inquiry about the signifigance of the left and right sides of the body, as an opportunity to study and reinforce our understanding of the body , mind, spirit connection, here is an excerpt from the " Rand Mcnally Atlas of the Body and Mind." The motor cortex: coordination of movement Man has been liberally endowed by nature, not only with the ability to perform a wide variety of such movements as running , jumping, climbing and skipping, but also with the skill to perform delicate and intricate movements such as those which are neeeded to assemble a watch or thread a neeedle. The main center for the planning , initiation and execution of all the body's movements is the motor cortex. There are in fact, two motor cortices, one in each hemisphere. They are situated behind the frontal lobes of the brain, below the crown of the head. Each one controls the movements of the opposite sides of the body, because the nerve fibers which leave it, carrying the messages for the control of movement, cross over in the brain stem before they enter the spinal cord. " There is a nervous pathway which links the two halves of the brain and thus unites the mind. Known as the corpus callosum ‹ this link is a thick band of nerve fibers - about four inches long in humans - which penetrates deeply into the hemisphere in each side, and transmits memories and learning from one hemisphere to the other.(end of excerpt) There are of course , a lot of other processes contributing to the mind body relationship, but at least that basic example helps to explain the left /right crossover situation.. The specialized functions of the two hemispheres are : Left - verbal, analytical and dominant ....... Right - artistic, but mute. visio-spatial, musical abilitties and abstract thought. Even tho this is just anatomy, I hope you find this knowledge supplementary to the awareness which develops as one practices and experiences the effects of kundalini yoga and meditation.
