Guest guest
I am wondering about modifications I can do in baby pose until I can achieve it. I find that right now I cannot get balanced and it feels like a lot of pressure on my forehead since I can't keep my butt on my heels. As my weight-loss continues (thanks to KY) , could someone suggest something? Is it ok to keep my hands in front for a while? Or to sit on my heels and bend foreward as far as possible each time? Also I am wondering if Transitions To A Heart-Centered World or Relax and Renew, would be better for someone fairly new (5 months in), and for sets and meditations good for working with helping with years of bad habits. I plan to have both eventually, but can afford just one right now Especially since I buy in Canadian dollars LOL Thank you so much and have a Blessed Day! These are both meant to be relaxed positions (I have a friend who naps in baby pose), so do experiment a bit to find something you can be really comfortable with > Also I am wondering if Transitions To A Heart-Centered World or If I had to choose one, I would recommend "Relax & Renew" - it has lots of sets & meditations that can help with eliminating bad habits and clearing the body of the results of those habits. Guest guest
I started yoga (+85 lbs. from where I am now) doing the baby pose with hands below my forehead, one fist stacked upon the other fist. Weight distributed between elbow, elbow, stack of fists. I like using props when somebody provides them for me but for my own practices I find them too much bother. The prop is always across the room somehow. So this is my very low-tech solution! When I was heavier, I absolutely could not take a deep breath in a pose with my arms stretched above my head. Something about the weight, the pull of it differently- shaping my abdominal wall, maybe: I could not properly exhale with my arms over my head. I couldn't get the air out. I could kind of gasp it in-in-in but not out. My teachers couldn't explain. It wasn't due to lack of muscle tone as measured by crunches; I could do hundreds. Lots of poses simply don't work if your body isn't shaped a certain way, weight isn't the only factor. My partner's muscularity makes me suspect he'll never be doing the lotus postion. His thighs are simply too thick; his hips and knees and ankles would have to be rubber to turn at the necessary angles. Sat Nam Ardas Kaur (Like my name? It means "prayer", I got it maybe a month ago!) (aka Serena)
Guest guest
Hi Deb, First off, as another overweight person, let me congratulate you on being willing to seek modifications for poses, rather than letting your ego get in the way of your practice. This is very important for anyone who starts doing yoga, but for those of us who are overweight it can be vital. There are a couple of ways you can modify this pose. One is to use "yoga bricks" stacked up under your forehead so that you don't have to lower your head so far. You can use as many as you need, but more than two and it becomes unstable. If this is the case you might want to try a few firm blankets stacked up, and then maybe the bricks on top of that. The other thing you can do, if your weight is so great that you can't bend over hardly at all, is to sit in front of a door or wall. Then just lean forward a little and rest your forehead against the wall. As your weight drops and flexibility increases move your knees back away from the wall, a few inches at a time. Eventually you will be able to use the first modification that I described. Then you will be able to do the pose with no modification. Guest guest
Dear Deb, I think the rolled blanket idea might work best. It is more comfortable and stable. You can determine how many blankets and the heighth by the comfort, openness in the back and in the chest. The back should be fairly straight so that the heart center stays open. If your back in curved too much and chest is closed, you need more blankets. I think Relax and Renew is the best first book for you. It has sets for balancing weight and some of the more simple sets that create emotional balance, plus ideas for diet. Guest guest
Thank you for all your suggestion regarding baby pose One thing I adore about KY is that the teachers advise is always "honor your body". You do what you can ,even if it is only to breath during a certain movement, and it sure feels wonderful when you can do Breath of Fire longer or bend further. And I never feel akward because everyones eyes are closed!

Yoga was a supportive element in the process for sure but it was not instrumental. Ardas
