Guest guest
Hi all, I would appreciate some opinions on whether performing pranayama before asanas is beneficial or not. In "light on Yoga" by Iyengar he states that pranayama should never be performed immediately before asanas, since pranayama soothes the nerves and strenuous poses may ruffle them. I ask because I've been practising up to an hour of nadi shodana, or bhutashuddi pranayama before my asana routine and am not certain whether this is having a disturbing effect on my overall state. I experience mild trembling in most poses but I can usually link this to the amount of stretch I'm applying, my sense of balance or the amount of prana I'm raising. In my experience pranayama is easier after asanas but because of the way I've structured my sadhana I'm finding it difficult to incorporate all my practices and still lead a balanced lifestyle. thanks -Michael :-)PLUR(-:
Guest guest
I don't know about the Kundalini tradition, but in general there is no consensus on whether pranayama should come before or after. Iyengar says after asana, Sivananda says before. I once had a teacher who would do it in the middle. Try it one way and then the other and see which seems to work best for you. I'm always wary of absolutes. Guest guest
Michael: I'm new to KY practice, but in my little and personal experience in hata yoga and pranayama, is, that I feel better doing the following routine. - Basic Stretching - Warm up with some aerobic - Asanas - Pranayama .... always feel better after - Relaxation - Short meditation I've done pranayama before the asanas, but it takes me a little more effort to continue with the rest of my routine., I don´t know if this is right, but as long as i feel ok. it's right for me. I always try to listen my body, because when i listen my mind, most of the time takes me to an extreme. My hata yoga teacher told me once "the hardest you try, the less you can get. Always walk slow, but with no pause". And I've been able to do so, when I listen my body. Guest guest
Thanks for the replies, I experimented and found that not doing a full pranayama session before the asanas didn't make a significant difference. I actually felt less motivated, but I don't think the change was the sole reason. Pranayama after asanas was greatly invigorating as usual. I also tried including breath of fire in my pranayama (before) routine and found the rest of the practice to be highly energetic and in steadier then usual in some of the poses. So I suppose it comes done to what works best for the individual. thanks -Michael :-)PLUR(-:
