Guest guest
Sat Nam, I am three months pregnant. This month they are encouraging me to no longer lay on my back. I purchased several of the KY books. Transition to a heart centered world Relax and Renew Your Life is in your chakras and Alchemy of Love Relationships I have been doing several of the Mantras daily- ONG, ONG Namo guru dev Namo Ra MA DA Sa Sa Say HO Hung which are radically changing my life for the better. I am wanting to develop the root, sex, and navel, chakras but have stayed away from many of the exercises because they are contraindicated by my doctor during pregnancy. Are there any variations of the floor exercises that can be used during pregnancy to align and open these chakras without being in a laying down position? I have also avoided all work with the navel chakra and not performed the breath of fire. Guest guest
Congradulations! I just love talking about pregnancy and yoga! I have had two children at home and practiced kundalini yoga throughout both pregnancies, and I also taught pregnancy yoga. Each pregnancy was very different. First, I must wonder if there is some specific reason you are being encouraged to not lay on your back. I have heard something of it before, but it is not a widely practiced thing, though some people have shared scary stories about it on a list I was on with much debate following from the rest. My personal feeling on it is if you listen to your body and are not comfortable on your back then it's guidance should be followed. The body has very great wisdom. It knows how to birth a baby! In the case of birth we are just along for the ride to be amazed. Here is a website to check out: http://www.socalbirth.org/shelly/yoga.htm. It has the videos mentioned already (they are wonderful!). I have never been one to practice yoga in front of a TV (we don't even have a TV!), but my yoga teacher, Siri Narayan, gave me this video and I did it when I was visiting my family and I was very impressed. There are also four pregnancy yoga sets given on the website. I did them throughout my pregnancies. So you know, the usual pregnancy contraindications like not practicing breath of fire or doing inverted postures officially kick in after four months. Personally, I have always implimented them earlier because that is what felt right for me. Above all, pregnancy is a time to listen to the body and its wisdom. It burns me up when women give their power away to doctors, place their faith in them, and doubt their bodies. Rather we should be skeptical of anyone who advises us to do something that is not in alignment with our body's messages. However, modern society has been guiding woman away from listening to their bodies for some time, so it can take some conscious work. If you are interested their are several nice email lists for pregnant woman. I am familiar with homebirth and unassisted birth ones, though on such lists all woman are supported in their birth location choices. As far as developing the chakras, the naval chakra opens by itself as pregnancy progresses. I am not sure what laying down exercises you wish to avoid. Double leg lifts should be avoided, along with stretch pose and other intense abdominal exercises. They are not beneficial for the abdomen at that time, and they are also unnecessary. I would be interested in knowing what sort of floor exercises your doctor has contraindicated for you, or perhaps it was all of them. Enjoy this journey you are on! It is a rite of passage. Guest guest
Dear Leslie, Thankyou for your wonderful reply. I was encouraged to lay on my left side at night and told to avoid laying on my back. However I am finding that laying on my back with my knees propped up on pillows is the only way I can rest comfortably. They said that the weight of the uterus could hinder the blood suppy to the baby if I lay on my back. They do not want me to do any exercises that would have me lay on my back, no abdominal exercises, and no exercise that I have not been doing prior to pregnancy... which is frustrating. Last summer I biked fifteen miles a day and walked four to twelve miles if I couldn't bike... I lifted weights also... But once the weather turned cold and I started college full time,I stopped exercising...I became pregnant the last of NOV and now that the weather is turning warmer and I have a gym membership my doctor is telling not to resume activity because I have not been exercising the four months prior to conceiving...I think I am going to do light upper body weights for my arms and start a light walking/biking program and yoga anyway...I would go crazy if I had to stay indoors all spring and summer and not exercise a little... I feel physically horrible now that I have stopped exercising and am anxious to start a light program.. thankyou for the links to the videos Jennie -
Guest guest
Hello Jennie, Sat Nam to you. I'm glad I was of help. I very much believe in the ability of a pregnant woman to know what is good for her. None of the doctors or midwives I have known caution against laying on the back, though it is widely accepted that laying on the left side is beneficial and often most comfortable (as it was for me), though that is not alway the case (as it is with you). Sure, being told that laying on your back could kill your baby is quite scary, but it just doesn't sound very likely to me because it is so impractical. Not all doctors and midwives use strict cut offs or rules for what exercise is appropriate for a pregnant woman. Sorry, I don't mean to bash your doctor, but it does seem that you do not intend to follow his/her advise and that may well be wise, but in that case you may consider another doctor or midwife that you would be able to work with more openly. One of the best ways for a birth assistant to serve you is to know you very well. You know your situation and you seem pretty clear about what is comfortable and what level of exercise is suitable for you. Every person is different. Doing things that make you feel good during pregnancy is a point not to be ignored! Above all I would say to do what feels right for you. I do wonder if you may have a more constructive time with prenatals with some other doctor or midwife. If he isn't really listening now, don't expect him/her to when you are in labor! It is hard to switch doctors. I had to fire a midwife during my last pregnancy and it was like breaking up with a boyfriend or something, but it was sooooooo worth it! I felt so relieved afterwards and later found the perfect midwife for me. I wish you luck and a lovely pregnancy! Guest guest
I'd just like to add to this discussion. The reason pregnant women are advised (after the first trimester) not to lie on their backs is that it creates too much of a strain on the uterine ligamnets. As the pregnancy progresses (after the twenty -second week) there is a real risk of unterine weight compressing the vena cava and cutting off blood supply to the fetus. During pregnany there is a hormone secreted which relaxes all the joints to accomodate the changing body, but it also makes it very easy to overextend I'm all for people doing what feels right and good ( I've had three children myself and gave birth to one at home) but I think one needs to understand the reasoning behind advice given before one is in a position to make an informed choice.. I am certified in pre and peri natal massage so this is how I know this. Love and blessings, Avtar ______________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Juno offers FREE or PREMIUM Internet access for less!
