Guest guest
I know when we brush our teeth, we should gag ourselves to clean the monkey glands. But what are the monkey glands? sukhmani
Guest guest
Sat Nam Sukhmani Kaur! > I know when we brush our teeth, we should gag ourselves to clean >the monkey glands. But what are the monkey glands? sukhmani The "monkey glands", two mucosal glands at the back of your tongue, are cleaned physically by brushing that area. The gagging that results makes the eyes water, which is said to preserve the eyesight. Blessings, Sadhant
Guest guest
uh........er..........ahem.......monkey glands!!???!?!?! Can you explain the origin of the name? Gagging hardly seems like it is a healthy thing... I'm not talking about the eyesight factor, but the fact that it releases stomach acid back in the wrong direction. Can you elaborate a little more, please?? I have heard of yogis drinking lots and lots of water and then purposely inducing vomiting by tickling the monkey glands, as a purification exercise. Anyone else heard of this? -- Nick
Guest guest
Dear friends: >Gagging hardly seems like it is a healthy thing... I'm not talking >about the eyesight factor, but the fact that it releases stomach >acid back in the (I don't know the origin of the name.) As far as the regurgitation aspect is concerned, I have only experienced it when my stomach is not empty - it doesn't seem to happen me when I do the normal morning tongue cleaning. I also clean my tongue at night before bed, and although I used to have that problem, it has subsided with practice, or perhaps I have learned to control part of the muscle reflex involved with gagging so that it doesn't happen now. > I have heard of yogis drinking lots and lots of water and then >purposely inducing vomiting by tickling the monkey glands, as a > purification exercise. Anyone else heard of this? This is known as "jala dhauti" - it is done with lukewarm, slightly salted water, 5-6 glasses with 1/8 t. of salt per glass. One is supposed to initiate the regurgitation with vigorous uddiyana or nauli (the uddiyana movement plus right-to-left movement). If one still has trouble regurgitating, drink more water, and if that doesn't work, use the finger into the throat technique to stimulate it. There are even more fun cleansing techniques, such as vastra dhauti, which uses a cloth. Generally speaking, one should get guidance from an experienced person when learning these cleansing techniques... Guest guest
I have seen that in a Sivananda Yoga book. A cloth is actually passed into the nose and out the mouth... yikes... Do they also have a technique where it goes down the throat? k kelly mitchell Media Principia-Ex-centris Montreal,Quebec www.ex-centris.com <http://www.ex-centris.com> Sadhant Singh [kundaliniyoga] Thursday, February 15, 2001 8:45 AM Kundaliniyoga Re: Monkey glands Dear friends: >Gagging hardly seems like it is a healthy thing...
