Guest guest
Hello to all, I have a question about tension/stress/anxiety. I find that there are times when I get acute amounts of anxiety that build up in my body for no particular reason that I can pin point at times. It just seems to arise from nowhere and I find it very unsettling. I feel a sort of shakiness in my limbs and a tightness in my muscles, sometimes it lasts for an hour. My mind starts racing... and then it just gets worse because I start to think too much about it. Can you recommend any particular sets that would help me to learn to work through this anxiety... perhaps something that could help to curb it away for good? I don't know if this is misdirected energy or what, but it's really starting to interfere with my life. Sometimes this happens to me in public and it just drives me crazy... I feel like a have to get away and hide myself in my bed to calm down. help!! :oD Kelly kelly mitchell Media Principia-Ex-centris Montreal,Quebec www.ex-centris.com <http://www.ex-centris.com>
Guest guest
Dear Kelly: Perhaps the most important thing you can do when you notice this is to take conscious control of your breath - practicing your long deep breath will be helpful, of course. If you are alone (or not self- conscious), block your right nostril, and breath through the left, which is calming. Stress is, amongst other things, an issue of adrenal stimulation. The release of adrenaline is how the body causes the "flight-or- fight" reflex in response to stressful situations. The trouble is that in these high-stress times, often our adrenal glands are continuously stimulated, causing an ongoing secretion of adrenaline, so it takes little or nothing to cause the type of response you experience. There is no question that a consistent KY practice will help reduce your stress response, and increase your ability to cope with stressful situations. Gururattan's "Relax & Renew" has a number of excellent sets that will help with these issues, such as "Stress Set for Adrenals and Kidneys" (I really like this one!), "Removing Tension and Negativity", "Anti-stress breathing", etc. This book has many excellent tips about stress reduction. Hiding in your bedroom could be an excellent technique. Just remember to practice relaxation while you are there. Hoping you see quick and lasting relief, with all my blessings, Sadhant
Guest guest
Hi Kelly, I used to suffer from acute anxiety and tension when I was in my late teens, and it was most unpleasant so you have my deepest sympathies! I overcame it in the following ways: 1) I tried to "slow down" and become more easy-going in my life 2) I greatly improved the condition of my nervous system by practicing hatha yoga asanas every day, particularly those that require a lot of slow concentration, control and balance. 3) If I had an anxiety "attack" I decided I would allow what was happening to express itself and go with it, rather than fear it or try to fight it. This alone reduced the anxiety tremendously. I hope this is helpful and wish you the best of luck. Sat Nam, -- Nick
Guest guest
Hi Kelly, You might find a combination of the Bach Flower remedies will help - you can take up to seven at the same time, and they target different states of anxiety. The rescue remedy should be one of them. I also find Motherwort tincture a great help - I take 15 drops in a little water when I feel that anxiety coming on. It calms without sedating, is good for your heart and liver - the only contra-indication is if you flood during your period - it can aggravate this. This is just a little addition to all the great yogic advice you've been given. Sat Nam ! Avtar K. ______________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Juno offers FREE or PREMIUM Internet access for less! Guest guest
Hello! It looks like you've already gotten some really good advise. I thought I would add that I used to get some of the symptoms you mention, and they were caused by excessive caffeine consumption. I also had a boyfriend that would get panic attacks which seemed related to his then alcoholism (who knows which caused which). While you may just be getting this without any cause like caffeine, as many people seem to, I thought I would mention it anyway, just in case. I would get very shaky, sweaty, and my mind and energy would race. Anyway, it does seem that slowing down and becoming aware of the breath are keys to bringing ourselves out of this uncomfortable state. We can control the mind with the breath. Eating well and avoiding intoxicants can only help things along. I've find it helpful for myself to remember when things get difficult that that is just why we're here. We did not come for everything to go easy and smooth. It is through challenges that we grow and get the opportunity to test our abilities. It is often when we are in times of great strain that we begin to feel God with us. Guest guest
thanks to everyone for their advice. Regarding my age... I'm 30 so I don't think that estrogen is necessarily a factor here. (i hope!) I also don't drink coffee for the very reason that it completely spaces me out and makes me very jittery. I rarely drink.. the odd glass of red wine here and there and it actually doesn't bother me at all. I wrote to someone off the list about how I seem to internalize a lot but then have a problem with releasing it. I do voice my opinions to others and address situations that arise that may be negative with others, but it seems that I am fighting this inner battle with myself. Strange thing is, I don't know what I'm fighting with myself about. That is exactly how it feels... an inner battle for.......??? It's almost as if my body is saying.. what are you doing... you should going in this direction.. but my rational thought keeps me where I am. It's really frustrating not to know why this is going on. It's as if I've put a gag on my heart and now I can't hear what she's saying. man....I'm really depressing myself!! The hands should be like you are holding a ball and the figures are not out flat (that is bad for the tendions) Thus you may alternate between finger tips and palms down. I found after 2 weeks that something happened to my nervious system and I could remain calmer. SA TA NA MA Meditation is also excellent as is long deep breathing. We have to work on all levels to get to this point. Over time you will feel more peaceful inside and relate to life differently. Depending on your age, make sure you have enough estrogen. Over 40 you need to check it out. I feel like a have to get away and hide myself in my bed to calm down. Then maybe that is what you should do. Guest guest
Dear Kelly, This sounds like me a lot of the time. I believe that KY is helping me bring some of the frustration and negativity to the foreground of my mind, if you will. This means that some days I am more "edgy", anxious or depressed (sometimes all of the above). I have gotten into trouble with relationships from this response, but I still think it's all part of the process of self-discovery and will one day bring a more positive result. What I mean is, I, too, internalize a lot - and keep too much inside. It isn't healthy for me or my family/friends. So, if KY is calling it to my attention and in a way forcing me to release these feelings (if not always in the best manner;) that is a true positive growth event in the long run. I think that by paying attention to myself and to my reactions both good and bad, I am becoming better able to understand and control these extreme emotions when they rise to the surface. I also feel more happiness and serenity much of the time. Dealing with your true inner self isn't always easy, since we all repress some part of our feelings and experiences. KY helps us face ourselves, and thereby improve our lives. I hope this is what you are experiencing. Don't be so hard on yourself, listen to that inner battle. Keep doing your KY - it may be that you're working towards a significant change in direction that you can't yet see or understand. It will become clear when it's time. (Sorry so long - this message struck a cord!)
