This is the way it was explained to me: We chant "ONG" in KY, rather than "OM". OM means the Infinite, and is an excellent mantra for monks, people living a secluded existence, people getting close to death - that is, people who are ready to let go of the material world. ONG means the Infinite within the finite, and is more suitable for those who still live in the world, who still need to create and manifest. Since KY is a yoga for householders, people very much in and of the world, we only chant ONG. Many blessings, Sadhant
Guest guest
Om (also aum) is a transcendental sound vibration. As I learned it, if one looks at the sanskrit figure, the top part of the three-like part signifies the waking state, the bottom part is the dream state, the line that comes out from the middle is deep sleep, the cresent shape is maya (illusion) and the point is a bindi- a point which encompasses all. That may be speculation, but it is interesting anyway. I feel that it has a calming expansive effect. I don't think there is anything wrong with chanting it if one feels drawn to doing so, regardless of their occupation. As far as how and when that is up to you. Usually there are three parts, the "a" (which is the three-like form), the "u" which is the line that comes out from the middle, and the "m" which is the rest. It is sanskrit and "ong" is gurmukhi as far as I know. Aum is often used in the beginning of a mantra and seems similar to ong in that way.
