Jiwan means soul (spirit), so your name would mean, "princess of the soul" and your husband's "lion of the soul". Guest guest Posted April 15, 2001 Report Share Posted April 15, 2001 (Leslie's husband, Paul, now commenting:) I can't really say exactly about "jiwan," being that my knowledge is in Sanskrit rather than Gurmukhi, but since Gurmukhi is relatavely closely derived from Sanskrit, I'd like to explain something about the Sanskrit "jiva." First of all, the words jiva, atman, and brahman all refer to the same subject. The living entity is the soul, and the soul is the living entity. There is also no absolute distinction between atman and brahman. However, in the different stages of material/spiritual realization, these are felt differently. The jiva is focused on living life in the world. The atman is individual consciousness, one with, but separate from others, experiencing pervasiveness within a particular identity. Brahman is the same living soul, but experiences complete all-pervasiveness. So jiva, atman, and brahman are all the same pure spirit soul, but the focus is different. Checking in the Cologne Digital Sanskrit Lexicon http://www.uni-koeln.de/phil-fak/indologie/tamil/mwd_search.html we find that the word "jiva" emphasizes "living entity."
