Guest guest
Hope several of our experts here can advise me about something: About a month ago I was practicing KY exercises that included crow squats and frog pose. The next day my right knee was very painful when I walked down a flight of stairs. The pain has not lessened, and now I feel it both walking up and down stairs. On my father's side of the family, everyone gets arthritis in their knees by the time they reach their 70s. I have many years to go before I reach that age! I have felt the occasional knee twinge during other hatha yoga classes over the past few years, particularly in bridge pose, but nothing much. A hatha yoga teacher told me that, in her opinion, the KY crow and frog poses put the knees in an unnatural and possible jeopardizing position. I don't know anything about anatomy so I can't judge one way or another. All I know is that my knee has been paining me relentlessly. Any suggestions - please? I started drinking Yogi Tea's Joint Comfort herbal tea yesterday in the hopes that this will help. I am using a heating pad for about 1/2 hour at night, as well. Thanks very much! Guest guest
Hi Jiwan, list- Regarding knee pain- I have also heard that the KY exercises mentioned in previous posts are not a good idea for people with troubled knees. The KY version of the archer pose also has the shin extending forward of vertical- knee out over big toe- which I was taught was not ideal for the knee joint. I do find that the KY version engages the muscles in my thigh and knee much more actively than the hatha yoga version, so I do it mindfully (since I am not currently having knee problems). I don't find it necessary to avoid poses that cause some people problems, if they don't cause me problems. I find that nearly ever pose is wrong for somebody, and a basic goal/outcome of asana practice is the development of personal physical wisdom and physical intuition. I have had arthritic knees in the past, and bringing down my body weight and avoiding daily wear of even moderate shoe heels (less than 2 inches) promptly resolved the knee pain. I think if I put on 20 lbs and regularly wore even medium height heels, my knee pain would promptly return- it would simply be more stress on the joints than mine are constitutionally able to bear. Guest guest
I know what you are talking about when it comes to frog pose and as much as I love Kundalini Yoga, this pose is not the best if you do have a tendency to have knee problems. Because of the position of the feet, 1st position for all you ballet enthusiasts, the knee joints are actually twisted while you are bending and straightening your legs. If the strength is not there to begin with, injuries can happen. kelly mitchell Media Principia-Ex-centris Montreal,Quebec www.ex-centris.com <http://www.ex-centris.com> JiwanMukta Kaur [jiwanmukta_kaur] Friday, April 27, 2001 8:12 AM Kundaliniyoga Knee pain after KY session Hope several of our experts here can advise me about something: About a month ago I was practicing KY exercises that included crow squats and frog pose. Guest guest
Dear fellow knee-pain sufferers: Perhaps it depends on the type of knee problem and the knees in question. I've had knee problems all my life (primarily cartilage- related), but since I started doing frogs on a regular basis, my knee problems have diminished. They still get sore from time to time, but it seems less frequent and less severe. Turmeric is very helpful, I find. Also, anyone with tendencies toward joint-structure problems and/or osteoarthritis should look into the latest research on glucosamine sulfate, which, particularly in combination with chondroitin 4- and 6-sulfates shows significant improvements in symptoms (that is, pain relief and imflammation) as well as improved structure & function, improved ability to build cartilage, increased blood supply and more antioxidant protection for joints. This is a followup study to those using N-acetylglucosamine, which is effective, but not as effective as glucosamine sulfate (these are not pharmaceuticals, but nutritional supplements) Many blessings, Sadhant
Guest guest
There's a wonderful article about knees in this month's issue of Yoga Journal. Included are some good suggestions on proper alignment in various asanas. I ruined my knees 25 years ago while training to run marathons. I was unable to walk without pain for several years. I began practicing hatha yoga and believe that it is what has kept me on my feet. I'm able to walk 15-20 miles a week now. I have found ice packs to be soothing and healing when my knees do become sore. They can be a bit uncomfortable at first, but one gets used to them quickly. I'd be interested to hear of more healing therapies for knees. Many blessings to you all, Charlotte Sadhant Singh wrote: > Dear fellow knee-pain sufferers: > > Perhaps it depends on the type of knee problem and the knees in > question. Guest guest
Sat Nam, I also suffer from knee pain on occassion and the most beneficial treatment I have found is acupuncture. Usually one treatment will do me for at least a few months. If it is really bad then I get two and I am fine for a few months. It has also helped me with shoulder pain. > > > > > > "OUR DESTINY IS TO BE HAPPY" > > - Yogi Bhajan > > > > You can UNSUBSCRIBE from this list at the eGroups Member Center (My Groups), or send mail to > > Kundaliniyoga- > > NO UNSUBSCRIBE REQUESTS TO THE LIST PLEASE! > > WEB SITE: kundalini yoga > > > > KUNDALINI YOGA ON-LINE TRAINING. One I had was a kneecap tracking problem, which can show itself with stairs etc. This is due to unbalanced muscles round the knee. Ifthis is diagnosed ( I suggest trying to find the exact cause) then the remedy is to do special exercises which work the small muscle above knee, on the inside, and also streching thigh muscles. I was advised also to not do e.g step aerobics, and personally, I would avoid frog etc, until things improve. Guest guest
Hi Kelly ...I'm not a qualified medical person, just someone who has read around my injury (as many do!). So I think you need to get a diagnosis e.g to eliminate cartilidge problems etc. Frequent hamstring stretching is good for this kind of thing - you can do it standing, holding anke - and to stengthen the muscle near inner kneecap: sit on a chair. slowly strighten and lower right leg . keep right foot over to the left a bit, to force the inner muscles of lower right thigh to work. Use a light weight eventually. (I know its a bit 'off' yoga, but knee troubles can cut out a lot of areas of yoga for some people) ...with the joy of yoga.. namaste Mike >This is EXACTLY the kind of knee pain that I experience.
