Hi all...

the virus was sent to me too but i

did not open the attatchment... whew~!

these kinds of virus's are sneaky and appear

to be coming from your friends because they

"harvest" or "sniff" the entire computer for e-mail

addresses. The cleverly write e-mails in your name

to all your friends....

i have caught at least 5 virus's with this method below:

1. when i see an attatchment on an e-mail from

a friend, colleague, etc. i IMMEDIATELY e-mail them back to ask them if

they did indeed send me

a file, and to explain what the file is and what the name is.

2. If they say yes, then all is set. If no then

I DELETE the e-mail.

3. Go to the Symantec.com website and do a seach for

the file name of the attatchment in the e-mail,

then e-mail the sender with this

information and ask him to send it to friends he/she

thinks may have recieved the virus...

It sounds like alot of work but probably not as much

work as if you actually had an infected computer...

and think of how many people you can save from

computer disaster by doing this?

I ask all my friends to keep this method in mind...

just like a virus is spread in chain... please

share this method with your friends as well...

prevention is best medicine... no?... =)

hope this helps...

Mine did as well. Fortunately Norton was able to quarantine them before they

did any damage.

Hi Mal

If you are using Outlook Express, or Outlook for your mailer program then

you will have been infected. If you are using Netscape or some other program

then you will probably be ok. If your virus definitions are up-to-date and

Norton AV couldn't find an infection then you are probably clear.

The virus only activates following the first system reboot after infection.

To be extra safe, check your \windows\system directory for the following

files: hksdll.dll and kern32.exe. They are both deposited there as part of

the infection process. If you check out the Symantec site, and search for

"W32.Badtrans. 13312 @ mm", it will give you a full description of the virus

and its activities.

The "unable to open attachment" message you may have seen, which is

disguised as a Windows warning message, is displayed to mask the fact that

you are being infected by this virus.

Hope this helps.

(In case you are wondering how I know so much about it - someone infected me

with it last month. However I killed it before it had the chance to take

over my system and spread any further).

Hi Maria and All!

The virus threat seems to have gone for the moment.

No, not everyone on this list is going to get a virus. The virus that caused

the problem this week infected the computer of one of our rs, and

from there sent itself to every unreplied message in her Outlook Express

folders. Therefore everyone who had posted to the list over the last couple

of months, and whose message had not been deleted on her computer received a

copy.

Most folk did not open the infected attachment. Those that did have managed

to remove the infection.

I would stress the following:

1) You will NOT receive a virus by reading any messages on this list, as all

attachments are removed automatically before the messages are passed to the

list by . (That is our choice, not theirs.)

2) If you receive any unsolicited mail with attachments then be very wary of

opening them. Even if it is from someone with whom you have been

corresponding (which could happen with this virus - W32.Badtrans.13312 @ mm)

you are safer to mail them first and check if they have sent you anything.

(Thanks Akire for this advice! )

3) The Internet is currently experiencing more virus problems than usual.

Make sure you have an effective Anti Virus program (such as Norton AV from

Symantec) installed and activated, and keep your virus definitions updated

regularly. These programs are not expensive - you can get 12 months updates

for only a few dollars.

4) If anyone experiences any problems then please contact your Anti Virus

software vendor, and not this list.

5) Be aware of virus hoax messages, which can propagate and cause similar

problems to real viruses. Do not send any virus warning messages to the

list. If you receive one and you think it is genuine, then please forward it

to kundaliniyoga-owner and let me check it out.

6) Now let's all get back to Kundalini Yoga! :-)
