Dharma Sing says that vigorous navel pumping, as we do in Sodarshan, should be avoided if you have long-standing high blood pressure problems. He doesn't specifically mention contra-indications for Sodarshan, and perhaps you would find it doesn't bother you if you use mild navel point pumping, and are very conscious about maintaining an excellent neck lock, and are very careful to suspend rather than "hold" the breath, and are very smooth with your breath (these last points should be followed by all of us anyway). Listen to your own body and do what feels right for you, as always. All love surround you, Sadhant
Guest guest
Hi Sadhant It's not me who has the high blood pressure - it's one of my students. Are inverted postures contra indicated? Guest guest
Dear Ravi Kaur, > It's not me who has the high blood pressure - it's one of my students. Are > inverted postures contra indicated? Headstand (not used in KY generally) and shoulderstand are contraindicated. Especially headstand can be dangerous for people with high blood pressure, as are the frogs. Left nostril breathing, as Sadhant mentioned, is very helpful. Yogi Bhajan in "Healing Through Kundalini" recommends both long deep breathing ( or normal breathing) for 40 minutes every day and breath of fire through the left nostril (block the right nostril with the thumb of the right hand, fingers pointing up) for 1-3 minutes. Another exercise is this: sit in easy pose, place the palms together with fingers extended and thumbs crossed and, with the elbows straight, extend the arms 60 degrees up and as far to the left as possible. The fingertips of the right hand will cover the mounds at the base of the fingers of the left hand. Keep the elbows straight. Inhale deeply and powerfully through the nose, and exhale powerfully through the mouth pushing the navel towards the spine. Concentrate on the breath and continue for 11 minutes. To end, inhale deeply, exhale powerfully, hold the breath out for 10-15 seconds then relax. Please note that this pose might hurt a bit until the body aligns. It is also recommended to switch to left-nostril breathing when under tension. The breath normally switches from mainly left to right nostril (and back) every 2 1/2 hours (one nostril will be more open than the other- you can check this by blocking each nostril in turn and seeing through which nostril you breathe more easily), but you can channel it to the left nostril by holding the left hand under the right armpit, with the right arm pressing on it slightly in its normal position. People with low blood pressure can do the above breathing techniques the opposite way (right nostril breathing). Hope this helps. Many blessings, Satsang Kaur
