Are you saying that exercise in general, or just martial arts, might

interfere with the benefits of a yoga practice?

I enjoy exercising my body hard (taking several aerobics classes and doing

weight training) as well as practicing yoga. I really like the contrast.

Both, I feel, are beneficial to me in very different ways.

Namaste,

Hi Myra,

No, quite the contrary. Martial arts and other forms of exercise will

complement your yoga practice. Feel free to practice any form of exercise

that makes you feel better. The only thing you should be careful about is

not to do so many different things as to forget what you are doing. Doing

too many things at one time might prevent you from getting serious benefits

from any of them. Any manageable number (maybe 3-4) would be fine.

Wonderful, then keep doing them. The way they make you feel is the best

indicator of whether you should continue or not. Let us not forget that

yoga, at its origin, is not essentially a physical art (same is true about

some of the martial arts). Its ultimate goal is not to give you nice muscles

(not that there is by any means anything bad about that) but open the doors

of the spirit for you. KY works on the body / mind / spirit connection, so

it is very well rounded. There are other yoga paths (with the same purpose)

that emphasize a certain aspect (meditation, devotion, chanting, physical

postures).

It is good to complement your practice with other techniques that might be

beneficial in different ways. This shouldn't sound like any of the yoga

paths is incomplete - they are all complete in themselves. Simply repeating

a mantra can give you the experience of spirit all by itself, so does

meditation, so does selfless service. KY is an excelent combination. While

KY is complete in itself, like other yogas, you can of course complement it

with other exercises - so please do if you wish.

Many blessings,

Satsang Kaur
