Sat Nam,

I have been noticing that the longer I do the mantras

and daily meditations I am able to calmly go about my

day and the things that would normally stress me just

seem to be happening to another person and don't seem

to affect me that strongly. I experience things but

am not affected up and down emotionally anymore. Is

this normal? Also, I have a friend that I love dearly

and I know that this person is lying to me,

manipulating me, using me, and I know this... but I am

responding in love, tenderness, and am helping this

friend and treating them the way I would want to be

treated...I don't buy the lies at all but do not

intend to confront them with them(it really doesn't

affect me one way or the other.. at this point) they

seem to need them to hold onto or something but I'm

not sure what...How is this going to affect their

karma? If I continue to respond in love do you think

it will help them to see what they are doing? Is there

a mantra or healing that i can send to them so they

see the destructive tendencies that they are creating?

I am very concerned about them...I don't want to see

them ruin their life.

SatNam,

SK

Dear Quetesh,

Most people wouldn't probably think it is normal, but it is precisely why we

do yoga! To understand and experience that we, the real "we", are not bound

by the little events of life, and our state does not depend on them.

Patanjali's Yoga Sutras opens with a sutra that loosely translated means

"The purpose of yoga is to still the troubles of the mind". The

transcendental state lies beyond the mind, beyond the senses. Peace of mind

is an exceptionally important step in the right direction. Congratulations!

Just a thought: if you know that s/he is manipulating you, then you aren't

really manipulated in the first place...

The ways of karma are hard to predict. You would need to know the whole

history of that person, everything they know, everything they feel. Only

then you could maybe tell.

Love also means speaking the truth, if it is done with the intention to help

the other person, and if it is done with kindness. I don't know the details

of your situation, but here are a few thoughts. First of all, people lie

mostly out of fear - fear that you wouldn't understand or accept them if

they told you the truth, or fear that you wouldn't help them if they didn't

"use" you without your knowing. One thing that worked for me is to let them

know (gently) that there is no reason to fear, and there is no reason to

lie, and that I loved them anyway. So we have no need to play games. If you

say this however make sure it doesn't sound accusatory in any way ("I know

you are lying! Why can't you tell the truth?"). Fear of accusation is what

probably caused the lies in the first place. Put all your love and all your

kindness into it.

Keep them in your prayers. But also ask them if there is anything you can do

to help. Love will find a way.

Many blessings,
