Hi Janet,

There are in fact many answers to your question. 108 is a mystical and very

auspicious number in India, Tibet, Japan and other Asian countries. 108 is

the number of elements in the universe, the number of good wishes, and also

the number of misconceptions about yourself that you unknowingly hold (there

are even more meanings than that!). Full-size malas (prayer rosaries) used

to count repetitions of a mantra have 108 beads. Numbers that can add up to

108 are also auspicious and used in many occasions. Such are 54 and 27 (54 *

2 = 108, 27 * 4 = 108) and that is why you will find these numbers very

often.

Many blessings,

Just adding to Satsang's response. The numbers and the times are what are

required to achieve a certain effect. Some power is released or some

resistance is overcome (or both) with this number of repetitions. Something

happens.

Dear Satsang Kaur

Is there not some significance in the fact that the numerology of all these

numbers reduces to 9 - that is for 18, 27, 54 and 108, all of which are

commonly used in KY?

Sat Nam!

Sat Nam!

108 is a number that is very sacred. There are 108 principal gopis. They

are cowherd girls who danced with Krishna is the rasa-lila, his girlfriends.

108 is the numerical equivalent to the AUM sound. There are also 108

Upanishads.

My husband has had this number figure prominently in some very intense

spiritual experiences.

9 is another mystical number on its own. So is 3, from which all the above

actually proceed (ida, pingala and sushumna; experience, experienced and

experiencer; knowing, known, and knower; sattva, rajas and tamas). There are

whole scriptures written on this. There are many meanings behind it as

littlebird Leslie noted, but in all these meanings 108 is the number of

completeness. Something done 108 times is really "done". So it is important,

as Gururattan Kaur said, to do the exercises for the recommended number of

times.

Many blessings,

Satsang Kaur
