Guest guest
Sat Nam I am new to yoga and KY. I have only experimented with a few positions, stretches and quiet times of meditation. Yesterday I decided to give this a real start. I was working along with a video tape class for the first time. I was not really focusing much. Basically, I just wanted to see if I could do the work and hang in there. About midway through, I was overtaken with uncontrollable, entire body tremors and sweating. All I could do was to slump into a semi easy pose and fold my hands into a prayer until this subsided. It took awhile. I tried to rejoin the video class, but moving very slowly and cautiously. Did I awaken the Kundalini energy? Did I just overdo it? This caused a bad headache. I am very concerned about this because I do not get headaches. Really. I have only had three in my life and that was before the onset of flu. I am very active and blessed with wonderful health. However, today I took an aspirin because the head pain was still there. I also slept late and took a two hour nap. I'm still dragging (of course it could be the aspirin). I am confused. I usually fit many hours of activity into a day. I am asking myself...should I leave well enough alone? Why practice something that will cause headaches and tiredness? I have been told that I have a tremendous amount of energy. I would like to utilize my gifts to reach full potential but I don't want to mess myself up either. Many of the yoga and meditation topics I have read about come very naturally to me. Many of the yoga activities I remember doing instinctively as a child. This comes very easily to me. I don't mind working through a rough beginning to attain higher goals. However, I have great respect for this and do not want to toy with such energy. I would appreciate your thoughts. Thank you, Heidi

Guest guest
Are you aerobically fit? You might have over done it, in which the case the exercise becomes anerobic and you're blood sugar can get thrown off. Keep up and find your pace. A lot of videos are not at the pace that is right for you. Many of my students complained about Gurumukh's video for exactly that reason, for instance. Sincerely, Seva Simran Singh Heidi B. Guest guest
Dear Heidi, > Basically, I just wanted to see if I could do the work and hang in there. About midway through, I was overtaken with uncontrollable, entire body tremors and sweating. Definitely sounds like you over did it. And over doing it is entirely different for different people. What exercises were you doing and for how long? Your reactions sound very extreme and are not the common reactions to a regular set. Yet these are your reactions so you must taylor your practice to your sensitivity. Even though you are young and vital with a lot of energy, you must be more gentle with yourself and pay attention to the subtle energies. >All I could do was to slump into a semi easy pose and fold my hands into a prayer until this subsided. That was good to wait. Baby pose is a good pose to go into to balance out. Sit on your heels and then put your forehead to the floor and arms to the sides. > It took awhile. I tried to rejoin the video class, but moving very slowly and cautiously. It was a good idea to go slowly, but sounds like you should have ended for the day when you had the temors and sweating. > Did I awaken the Kundalini energy? Did I just overdo it? Sounds like you over did it and maybe stressed your kidneys. The first Sadhana I went to I did the full set the full times and I was so exhausted that my body was overheated for over a week. This was not kundalini. It was exhaustiion. > This caused a bad headache. I am very concerned about this because I do not get headaches. Too much energy in your head. A foot massage even if you have to give it to yourself would be good. There are pressure points to get rid of headaches. One is inside the web of the hand between thumb and forefinger. >I am asking myself...should I leave well enough alone? Start out very slowly with greatly reduced times and follow by deep relaxation and meditation. Why practice something that will cause headaches and tiredness? Definitely don't do that much. Stay attentive to your body and let it be your guide. Never force yourself. Maybe just start out with spinal flexes and a meditation and work up. Many of the yoga activities I remember doing instinctively as a child. This comes very easily to me. Now you must work with the subtle energies. The gross skills you already have. Please write and tell us how you are doing. I am sure you will be fine. Sat Nam, Gururattan Kaur
