Guest guest
Sat Nam, My name is Hiran and and I have been an observer of this wonderful list for months now but this is my introduction. Can I say a quick thank you to all contributors for your valuable insight and inspiration. Sat Nam Thomas, I am a musician - chiefly a guitarist - and a struggling vocalist. before playing I often use the tuning in methods( e.g ong na mo guru dev na mo) to get focus, unify my resources and conduct them through music. I keep on getting a freshness of appreciation and it feels blissful. Often when I just sit and play after doing KY I get very warm indeed, like i've just been on a run, and i have begun to consciously pull locks during and after practice which can now last tirelessly for eight hours or more. The focus on breathing aids singing tremedously on a technical level. The breath becomes more efficent supporting timbre, volume, stamina and pitching also taking pressure away from the throat area. Just as KY promises I have found a healthy body leads to a healthy mind, and in terms of singing, KY has hieghtened my perception of tension in my body (possibly the greatest hinderance to all human performance) and importantly it's psychological correlates. Dealing with what I have found has given my body and mind more looseness and freedom that in the least aids the production of a note. When i was feeding my fear of failure and the needs of my ego I was starving my music. This spiritual art is amazing and horizons seem to expand continuously. joy surges when I know others feel it too. sat nam, hiran > _______________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Guest guest
I'm glad to hear someone else is trying to make the same connection between yoga and music. I am likewise a guitarist and struggling vocalist. Singing seems to involve one's ego so much more than some other instruments, not just in the perception of the singer but also in that of the audience. I think it's a fascinating instrument. I will follow your suggestion to use breathing and the locks with guitar - I seem to remember that classical guitarists use the breath in their training. Peace, -thomas

I am likewise a guitarist and struggling vocalist. The connection I have with music is amazing in itself and only gets strengthened with the yoga to accompany it. My voice has become even more powerful and seems to have more clarity since I've started KY. It's a shame it can't help my guitar playing though. I'm still learning to play, so I would consider myself to be a vocalist but a struggling guitarist. _______________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Guest guest
There is a wonderful book you might be interested in - "Chanting" by Robert Gass. It comes with a sample CD of chants which include "Shri Ram" and his very very popular version of "Om Namah Shivaya". Also, you might be interested in attending a drumming circle. The one I go to is Native American based, but there was a recent newspaper article showing people meeting in a park area playing all sorts of drums. The entrainment and healing power of the sound and repetition are still there. Chanting with the drumming is an additional bonus. Or try drumming by yourself, perhaps before your KY as a warmup. (I guess this would by OK to do) I find it makes me very tingley all over and I can feel the energy moving. The newspaper article listed 3 books about the health benefits of drumming. If anyone is interested in their names or in the article (I can scan and email it), please email me off-list. But the really great thing is - anyone can play the drum and/or chant!! Jan PS - for headaches I find that visualizing a swirling circle of energy above the top of my head seems to take them away - not always, but often enough to try it _______ Get your free @ address at
Guest guest
Dear Janice, I would be interested in the articles that you mentioned. Though I'm not a singer or player, I recently bought a book you might be interested in called "Healing with the Voice" by James D'Angelelo which includes chapters on "meanings of vowels and consonants, general insturcions for toning and chanting, discoviering your fundamental tone," and "toning the chakras" among others. I've been involved w/ KY for about 2 months. Presently I do about 30 minutes of KY and three 11 minute meditations. I've been on summer vacation (I'm in education) and fret about keeping up the practice when I return to work. My school begins at 7:00 and that will mean getting up at 4:30 to do KY! May you have good luck w/ your personal practice. Guest guest
I am interested in the books, the articles and the CD's. I ordered a drum some years ago...altho I haven't spent a lot of time with it lately, I do know the healing effects of drumming. It's a meditation in its self... and the vibrations..WOW! Any of the info you have would be appreciated. Thanks for sharing, Barbara Miller -
Guest guest
Sat Nam! I've been meaning to comment on this thread. I did a lot of singing when I was in middle school and especially high school. What I found when I discovered yoga later on was that the difference with devotional singing was that I no longer felt self conscious about how I sounded. I was singing to and for and of God and it was the vibration that was important. I also think of how many "popular" singers started out singing in church choirs and things like that. Another benefit is that our nervous systems get a lot stronger with our yoga practice and that really helps to stay cool and centered when on stage. Toning I think is a bit different than the chanting we do in yoga, though it could be applied in a similar way. I lived in Washington state for awhile and got to know some talented toners there. I think it is a very valuable technique, and anyone can do it, though there are advanced levels of practice and healing it seems. I've always enjoyed letting loose with my voice. During the births of both of my children I entered a light trance like state and chanted what sounded like native american songs that really helped me a lot. With my last birth I was told that the song was one to anchor the child to the earth and keep them in their body for the birth. It was very powerful and exactly in energetic alignment with what was going on in my body. Then of course their are the names of God that continually amaze me with their reality and power. Hari Bol!
