When out of necessity I find myself sharing a room, I tend to not practice my

meditations since I don't want my chanting to be a disturbance to my neighbor.

In these instances can one chant such kriyas as the sat kriya, morning call

medical meditatiton (as described in Dhamra Khalsa' "Meditation as Medicine) and

the kirtan kriya silently? Or is it better to switch temporairly to a silent

kriya, and if so what would you reccommend? Thanks for all of your help.

Over the years I have had lots of students ask me this. I usually tell them yes

you can do it silently. You can also do it in a whisper, or you can do it

subvocally where there is no sound being heard outside of yourself but your

mouth is still moving and your tongue hitting the palate.

Dear Joe,

Silent or whisper is fine when necessary. Make sure that your tongue hits

your palate and you are not just mentally doing the mantra when chanting is

specified.. The tongue on the palate creates a reaction in the brain. After

years of chanting I can now feel the vibration on my palate even when I

mentally chant. But I still chant when it is directed to do so.
