Guest guest
Dear Maria, You can offer a person tools but you can't make them change. I would caution you not to pressure your suffering friend to meditate. Personally I find it challenging enough to make myself meditate even though I WANT to do it. And as a very stubborn person myself, I can tell you that there are some of us who, even when we know it would be good for us, if we feel like someone is trying to MAKE us change, we for sure won't do it. It can feel like admitting that we are wrong and they are right (stubborn people hate that). If your friend sees by your communication that you are clear, calm, happy and peaceful THEN she may want to try it. (It will be her own idea that way). My advice would be to pray for your friend and offer her unconditional love and support. Then concentrate on keeping your own negativity at bay and finding your own peace. It is my theory that when any one of us becomes more positive and peaceful it helps to lift up those around us. Guest guest
I have a little something to add to this line of thought. Someone I work with, who is a very positive influence on those around her, very generous, has a reputation for being so, etc., recently found out she has leukemia. There is no doubt she is in danger of dying, and of course the hospital system has her eating out of their hands. I want very much for her to do yoga, to tune in in some way; but she refuses to consider it. This is the first time I have seen negativity come from her, and I'm thinking that, being a very giving person, she must have always balanced her sympathies toward others with self-directed feelings of the opposite cast. Nothing I can say to her will make her think that yoga is anything but a freakshow. On top of this, of course, is the advice of her doctors, who say that she is in such bad shape that she should not under any circumstances do yoga. I worked for a time as a 12-step counselor, and what I learned there about no one ever being able to make someone else do anything has stayed with me throughout my life. I see it's applicability now, even though it hurts. My grandmother died of leukemia, and I have had an opportunity to see first hand what the snake-oil salesmen do to people who think they have no alternative but to trust doctors. However, all I can do is present the option, which I consider a duty. Making someone do something is not an option. I also have had some experience with suicide, and would like to say that as long as your friend maintains some channel of communication with others (albeit a self-depreciating one), then there is probably not much to worry about. Once the channel of communication is broken, there is cause for worry. I hope this helps, -thomas - "Peggy Sue" <pmcrae <Kundaliniyoga> Wednesday, July 25, 2001 9:22 AM stubborn people & change > Dear Maria, > > You can offer a person tools but you can't make them change. I spent quite some time researching yoga and meditation uses in cancer therapy, having had a few friends and family members who had cancer. Physical yoga and certainly meditation have gained a lot of respectability in recent years as complementary therapies, both with remedial and palleative uses. In fact there are a growing number of clinics and insurance plans that cover yoga and meditation therapies. Even online resources such as WebMD list yoga and meditation as recommendations both for improving body conditions (many times adversely affected by chemotherapy, radiation therapy and prolonged inactivity in the hospital) and for lessening pain (including chronic and cancer pain) and other side-effects of medication (such as nausea and dizziness). There have been studies on these topics, and yoga and meditation are increasingly recognized at least as ways to reduce pain and treatment side-effects, as well as alleviating depression (which itself is conducive to pain). Yoga and meditation are a part of the now well-known Dean Ornish method (along with a vegetarian diet), which has been used highly successfully in treating heart conditions and is now being used as an integrative cancer treatment as well (not taking the place of conventional treatments but in addition to them). Physical yoga exercises may be contra-indicated in some cases, especially very energetic exercises. Light exercise however can still act as a pain-killer because even light exercise can cause the brain to release endorfins. I have never heard of meditation being contra-indicated, quite the contrary. The meditative state is in fact beyond ordinary consciousness, and beyond pain. It is highly beneficial. You can probably find enough good resources even online to be able to give your friend some medically-approved information on the uses of yoga and meditation. This might go a step towards convincing her to try. Prayers and blessings, Satsang Kaur
