Guest guest
Hello friends, sat nam, I was wondering if someone could tell me if sitting down with the soles of my feet touching is an acceptable meditation pose. I cannot do lotus or perfect pose. I can sit in sukasana (or easy pose) but if I sit on the ground my legs start to get numb and the sensation is so uncomfortable that I cannot get up. Thus, I've been sitting on my bed in sukasana or with my soles of my feet touching, is this ok? thank youuuuu! sat nam to everybody ===== SAT NAM Make international calls for as low as $.04/minute with Messenger http://phonecard./
Guest guest
Sat Nam, > Hello friends, sat nam, I was wondering if someone could > tell me if sitting down with the soles of my feet touching > is an acceptable meditation pose. Yes it is. The idea is that for meditation your body should be in a relaxed but firm posture, with your spine straight. So you can even sit in a chair or lie on your back. The three most frequently used meditation poses - perfect pose, lotus and easy pose - are used because the body has a very good balance in them, and a stable base. But any pose that would keep your back straight and your posture steady is ok. > I cannot do lotus or > perfect pose. You may try to sit on a pillow and also use knee pillows or rolled towels, this will help ease the strain. There is also a modification of easy pose in which you do not cross your ankles one above the other (which can cause the numbness), but instead fold your legs in so that both legs rest on the ground. For this you need to fold the first leg so that the foot is very close to the body, with the heel in (like in perfect pose, almost), and then fold the other leg on the outside of the first. This pose might take a while getting used to, but I find that it does not cause the discomfort that easy pose can bring. Can someone describe perfect pose? I am familiar with lotus pose (which is impossible for me) and easy pose, but not perfect pose. I too have great difficulty sitting in easy pose for more than 10-15 minutes at a time. My legs "go to sleep" and it's tough to get up. Lying down works fine, except that I tend to lose awareness, though I'm not asleep. Guess I will have to go with sitting in a chair..... Guest guest
Sat Nam Lynn, The perfect posture is sort of a quasi lotus. The right leg is folded and the heel brought against the perineum (the soft flesh between the gentitals and anus). The left leg is folded, left foot sole upturned, is inserted in the fold between the calf and thigh of the right leg. Another sitting pose is the rock pose where you sit on your heels, both legs are bent in front of you. Meditating on the floor is difficult for Westerners, it isn't part of our culture. More important than the pose itself is how solid you are able to get in the pose with a minimum of discomfort, while the back is being kept straight. Try cushions, pillows, towels, soft rugs. I've been meditating on the floor for years and I am only able to do it because I've found the right combination of cushions to placate my legs that have been hurt from years of running. Even still an hour is about th emost I can do. I usually meditate for a half hour, stretch my legs out and resume. Experiment, be patient, try working with cushions and pillows. Guest guest
using a pillow or cushion under the buttocks can help a lot--there are cushions designed for meditation, but you can give it a try with any firm type of pillow. ( a throw pillow, e.g.) I need that lift to keep my spine erect and my legs from falling asleep during lengthy meditation. I think its just the kind of thing you have to experiment with until you find out what works best for you and your body. Guest guest
Sat Nam, I've been difficulty with the easy pose as well, though in my case it is the feet particularly the right foot, that goes to sleep. I love the suggestions offered so far but was also wondering if these problems could be caused by poor circurlation, and if so are there any suggestions to improve blood flow? Guest guest
Sat Nam mgb, I don't know about the souls of the feet touching but my tendency is to think not. I may be wrong. Have you tried to use a pillow to sit on? Also, be sure to be sitting straight. God gave use sit bones to use when we sit. They are located at the bottom of each cheek and if you put your hand in the crease of the upper let and you butt, you will feel it. Now, when you sit, feel those bones, roll upon them. Tilting the pelvis forward to sit in front of them and back to sit behind them. Roll around on them. Then, sit right on top of them. That is where one should sit. It takes muscles to do this. So if it gets too uncomfortable, relax a bit and resume the posture. Also, after awhile your legs will not be numb. Guest guest
Sat Nam Joe, Sometimes if the pelvic griddle is not aligned, I have heard it can cause problems witht the feet going numb. A chiropractor is a good place to have that checked. There are a number of ways to improve the blood flow. Vitamin E, massage, exercise and I believe a number of the KY sets would help as well. Just an aside, I recently took a class with Guru Dev in NY and one of the asanas he gave to us was one very essential for men age 3l and over. It is for the prostate. You lie on the floor on your back near a wall. Put your legs up at a 90 degree angle and your butt against the wall. Beathe long deep breaths. for 11 min. Best to you.
