Guest guest
Dear Joe, A long time ago I went to a Silent Retreat for a weekend, I learned that there were 5 distractions to meditation. Unfortunately I do not remember all of them, but the fidgeting and itching are apart of those distractions. Even pain can sometimes be apart of it. It is another way for the mind to try and get you to stop what you are doing. Try to relax. Take note of what is happening and let it pass. Keep Up and You'll be kept up. Hang in there. This too shall pass. Guest guest
The questions continue.... About 15 minutes into my meditation I find it difficult to maintain the position where your hands are relaxed on your knees in gyan mudra. My hands start to slide off my knees. I want to bend my elbows. I start to shift trying to find a comfortable position. This as you can imagine plays havoc with the concentration. And then there are the itches. If I try to ignore they just become worst, though sometimes they will go away. Oftentimes I give in and scratch and that's the blissful end of it. Then again, sometimes they break out into a veritable plehora of itches. Such mundane problems, but they are a hinderance and any suggestions on how to deal w/ them would be appreciated. Guest guest
Joe, Try just sitting still .Try and estimate about 5 minutes of stillness, I mean don't move a muscle even if it feels like it is killing you to stay still. When you think that 5 minutes is up open your eyes and look at the clock, you will most likely find that you've only been there a minute or two. Try this once a day for a maximum of 5 minutes. then when you find that you can reach 5 minutes easily extend this to 6 minutes. You will find that after a while you will have a good sense of time and will be able to spend as long as you like in this state, You may even lose the sense of your body altogether. This will also build up your ability to concentrate or focus. Then your meditations will be better focused and more effective. Guest guest
Hi All, My name is Mel and I'm new here (been lurking for a week or so...)and this is a problem I have off and on. Here are some suggestions that work for me most of the time. First, I just try to sit perfectly still and work through the annoyance--whatever it is. Often it will dissipate on it's own within a minute or so. If that doesn't work and I am really uncomfortable, I will shift 'ever so slightly', like barely even a movement. I try to do this without giving it too much attention. This very small movement is often enough to releave the discomfort and without distracting me too much. I will then sit perfectly still again and usually all is well. After trying the above, if the discomfort continues to be extremely persistent and distracting, I will sometimes stand and do a little walking meditation for a few minutes, but it rarely comes to that. For itches or minor muscle twinges, ignoring them usually works, but if not I try to pause my meditation, not to scratch, but to give the itch or twinge my full attention for a couple of minutes. Try to concentrate, feel the itch, understand why and where it's coming from. This usually makes it go away--then I gently return to meditation. If this doesn't work, I'll go ahead and give it a small, slight scratch or adjustment, without worrying about it and get on with meditation. In my opinion it's better to break concentration for just a sec and get over it than to blow 30 minutes of meditation worrying about not scratching or fidgeting. That's just my take, hopefully you can find some of it useful. Guest guest
Dear Joe, I know how you feel, maybe i can give u some idea of how i deal with this. However, I dont do gyan mudra, i just put my palms together facing up with thumbs touching, (what is this mudra called anyway?) this is practical and peaceful for me. About the itching *S, that does interrupt me from time to time and it's annoying. Well, my suggestion to you is think of bodily interruptions like your own thoughts. What do we do with thoughts? we observe them pass with the current of a river so to speak, we just watch them come and go but dont identify with them. A bodily interruption becomes a thought thats why it interrupts you, it's telling you I'm itchy scratch meee!, and in a more psychological level a thought just says I'm fantizising come with meee, noooo just let them drown in the river! *s, sorry just being silly. Well, the trick is the more you want to get rid of the itch, the worse it will get and then you will scratch. Like a thought, the mind gets tense when you make it do something it's not used to. So what is the solution? all these mind games are confusing to me too. Be an observer, that is my best suggestion, observe the itch, observe the thought of the itch, and it will go away on its own. One good technique is trying to put more awareness to your breath, mantra, whatever it may be that is your focus. This wont happen overnite, mental power grows over time. Everytime i have to scratch I usually just scratch, but I've been getting more focused since I started, no rush *S Love, maria. --- Joe Estes <jestes1 wrote: > The questions continue.... > > About 15 minutes into my meditation I find it difficult > to maintain the position where your hands are relaxed on > your knees in gyan mudra. Guest guest
Dear Joe, Try allowing instead of resisting. Also you may need to stop and do more KY. Maybe the energy needs to move and be used. Sat Nam, Gururattan Kaur
