Sinuses: the neti pot and baking soda

I've observed a few posts on nasal problems. I used to use a

saline solution with a neti pot (which I purchased at my

health food store- it just makes it easier as it has a long

spout and is easy to hold in your hand while dangling your

head over the sink- I highly recommend getting one- it beats

what I used to do which was filling the sink with water,

adding salt, closing one nostril, submerging my face and

inhaling!).

The instructions with my pot came with this excellent

suggestion. If you find salt irritating, use 1/4 tsp of

baking soda. It is wonderful, absolutely pain free for me. I

do it twice a day.

Sat nam,

Whenever I need to irrigate my sinuses, I would use a glass of water, close

off one nostril, inhale the water through the other, then drain both

nostrils over the sink.

The way I learned it. I fill the neti pot with body temp or slighly warmer

filtered water with just a little salt. You want to approximate your

own body's salinity level. I swat in the bathtub and begin pouring with my head

tilted to one side. I hold the neti pot with an open hand. When

the water has finished pouring I block off the nostril that the water was going

into and blow out any residual water with several strong

exhalations through the open nostril. Then I switch side and repeat the whole

precedure.

Hope this helps,

Dharam Singh
