Guest guest
Have you tried doing a half Lotus, just bringing one foot onto your thigh? That is what I am doing, varying the side each time. I am hoping that through my practice I will eventually get flexible enough again (I was able to do full lotus when I was in high school but I lost the ability by staying away from yoga for nearly 20 years...but I am back again) to do the full lotus someday. Guest guest
I'm certainly no expert, but I've read that westerners oftentimes have difficulty w/ the lotus position. I have problems w/ the easy pose myself. For 2 and 1/2 months I've been sitting on the floor fidgeting and intermittingly slouching. Today I decided to sit in a chair and could actually focus more clearly on the meditation than I could previously. I'm going to continue to sit in a chair to meditate. I'll try the floor out again at a later time, after I've opened my hips and hamstrings through a program of stretching. I think it's good to push oneself but can be counterproductive if we push too hard. Good luck w/ all of your endeavors. Guest guest
Dear Dennis, If you have not learned lotus position in childhood then it can be very difficult and painful so you might prefer to master half-lotus first as somebody else suggested. I am able to sit in lotus and this is my advice. Firstly sit with a cushion or folded blanket underneath your buttocks, this tilts the hips forward. Secondly you may find it useful to prepare by sitting in half-lotus for a few minutes on each side to stretch and release the hips. Then, if you can get into full lotus but your knees do not touch the ground, place cushions underneath your knees to support them. Again try on both sides. Start with holding the position for a very short time and gradually build up. Good luck!
