I don't think any question is too simple. I was fortunate to learn breath of fire directly from another person. However, if that option isn't available to you, the Kunalini Yoga.org website has a page on breath/pranayama that includes breath of fire: kundalini yogapranayam.html Sat Nam Chris

Guest guest
Yes Maria, The difference is it is much too violent to be done efficiently through the nose. This breathing is very strong with many effects. Guest guest
There are differences between Breath of Fire, Canon breath and panting. Breath of fire is through the nose, as taught by Yogi Bhajan. Canon breath is done with the lips puckered and the breath is felt at the top of the throat. It is a rebirthing breath, if I am not mistaken, and used in specific applications. In Breath of Fire, the mouth is closed. It is a rapid breath pumped from the solar plexus and navel point. Panting is a breath through the opened mouth sometimes with the tongue out. All techniques work to eliminate toxins from the system but only Breath of Fire cleans the blood and expands the lungs. Guest guest
Dear Jacques, I need to disagree with you. BOF is not too violent to be done efficiently throught the nose. Is has been done that way for eons. Perhaps you need not be so violent when you do BOF. Guest guest
Perhaps in other traditions the term "breath of fire" describes different techniques than we are familiar with, but as far as kundalini yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan goes, breath of fire is done as Dharam describes. I describe it as a rapid bellows breath where instead of the breath moving the diaphram and solar plexus, the naval area pumps the breath in and out. It is rapid and the inhale and exhale are equal. When you first try it, it may be hard to coordinate and you may start slow, but the goal is to do it as rapidly as possible. The benefits I am aware of is that it is very detoxifying, energizing, warming, and it speeds up the effects of the exercises it is used with (as directed). It is a good morning exercise, or a "late afternoon low's" exercise especially when done seated in easy pose with the arms up from the sides at a 60 degree angle with the thumbs pointing up and the rest of the fingers curled into the palms. This is known as "eagle pose", and when you finish (3 minutes is a good time) inhale deeply, rub the thumbs around the fingers for five seconds, and then touch your thumb tips together over your head, holding until you must exhale, and then as you exhale slowly lower your arms to your knees, imagining a rainbow coming out of your thumbtips. It is a great exercise, and is also good for strengthening your aura. But, this eagle pose exercise I describe here is just one thing you can do with breath of fire. Breath of fire can be used independantly or with other exercises. Guest guest
Breath of fire is not a violent breath. I have been taught by Gurucharan to raise the chest slightly and flutter the area between the navel and sternum as the breath moves in and out through the nose. It is not a belly pump. With practice over time you can extend the time. I have actually done the breath for more than an hour at a time. I simply felt radiant after. If the breath is uneven on the inhale or exhale, you will not feel comfortable. The breath needs balance. This should be practiced before the time is extended to 3, 5, 11, etc., min.
