But I have heard of yoga students with Sikh names. I believe Yogi Bajan gets these names from the Sikh Holy Book, written by the 10 Gurus called the Siri Guru Granth Sahib. I know for my name Jasjit Kaur, he went to a page in the book (according to my father Guru Das Singh), and picked a name from that page. It might also have to do with your birthdate (though I am not sure of that). I have no idea how things work these days, but I think Yogi Bajan used to give names to those who sincerely asked. Does anyone know if this is still the case? I have not been in touch with the Sikh community really since I was 12 accept for my parents. I found that mine seemed to come at just the right time when it did finally arrive. I don't think there is anything wrong with being anxious for spiritual insight into out lives! I usually think of people getting a new name when they take vows and join a monastery. Does YB make one up or is it already one of the names of your soul? It is considered helpful in that it is supposed to a personal mantra to point you or awaken you to your true nature. I was told that he uses astrology, numerology, and handwriting anaylsis, as well as intuition of course. I know there are web pages out there with the address to write to and information to provide (birth date for example). I just sent away for mine to deepen my spiritual understanding. I also know that some just ask him if they see him at a lecture or something and he just tells them. So it seems he may use whatever technique seems right at the time. It's been 10 weeks and I still have not received it. I can be patient now that I know it is not lost. Thanks for your post!
