Guest guest
Does anyone know of a website (preferably) or a book that teaches pronunciations for many of the words/terminology used in kundalini (or any yoga, for that matter)? For example, I know that 'asana' is pronounced like "A-sa-na" as opposed to "a-sA-na", but there are many words ('sadhana' for example) that I would like to have correct Indian pronunciations for as well as definitions. Many books give definitions but offer no or few pronunciations. Even though I don't usually use these words when speaking to others on a regular basis (I don't personally know any yogis), I'd kinda like my mind to be pronouncing them correctly, internally. Could anyone help me on this one? Sat Nam, --Mel Get email alerts & NEW webcam video instant messaging with Messenger http://im.
Guest guest
Mel: Looks like no one responded. I too have no book or website to suggest, but thought I'd add that to my knowledge - although I too pronounce asana as you described - technically, the "a" at the end is supposed to be silent. Guest guest
I think that what you might be thinking is that the "a" wasn't necessarily noted. The "a" sound is assumed after a consonant. Asana might be asan with an "a" sound casually pronounced. I'm no linguist but this is something to take note of. Guest guest
Sat Nam! Yes, the "n" has an open sound at the end that makes it sound basically like "na". My husband sudies sanskrit, but KY mantras are mostly in Gurumukhi, which is a different language. I know there is a lot of info on sanskrit on the internet, but I haven't looked into the Gurumukhi that much. Maybe you could check out sikhnet and see if you find any leads there. Mostly, a person usually learns pronounciation from other practitioners, though that is often not correct pronounciation anyway. Take himalaya for instance. It is really pronounced him allah yah, not him ah lay ah. There is even a whole yoga institute that uses the name and pronounces it incorrectly. To really learn it properly you have to go to the original language and learn it that way. Now that I think of it, I am remembering that my book of sikh prayers, "Nitnaym Baanees" translated by Dr. Santokh Singh, which I bought through Golden Temple: (800)829-3970 has pronounciation in the beginning. But it is pronounciation of original gurumukhi. I learned how to say the english transliteration correcty by listening to a tape recitation as I followed along. Someday I intend to put up a web page and have mantras with sound on it. radha! My daughter wrote that.
