Guest guest
Sat Nam! I wanted to write to ask about this last night but thought perhaps i would seem like i was "stereotyping" by some of my remarks... but now i think its relevant.. (i was also concerned that it was "off topic" of KY, but thought this would effect some of the members here... but if you wish not to post this i understand) I wanted to ask if any of the Sikhs out there felt threatened by the events that just happened... I think the police will be looking for "men with long beards and turbans..." i wanted to ask if this was a real fear in the communities...? as i went on the train to Boston this morning i noticed a lack of Sikhs... (except for one "western" Sikh... but the usual men were not there...) the train is not far from Guru Ram Das Gudwara in Millis) i thought to myself, was this fear? or perhaps coincidence? on the way home today, i was listening to reports on the radio of suspects being arrested in the Westin Hotel in Boston, which was evacuated... and that possibly two other men were on their way to Washington on an Amtrak Train.... this train was forced to stopped in Providence Rhode Island... when i got home to RI they announced that one man had been arrested from the train... and that he carried a knife on him....the excuse he gave police was that it was "part of his religion" they showed the man on television, handcuffed, and being put into a police car.... the man was not a Muslim but, obvious to me, a Sikh....! but i dont think they knew this....! my question now is, how fair was this arrest? Is racial profiling nessesary in these kinds of events? was this a justified arrest? they saw the turban and knife (kirpan) and just went with that! but is it perhaps nessesary to have a "better safe than sorry" attitude after a disaster such as this? i'm a bit outraged, but also understanding of the circumstance, so also confused.... my heart goes out to all the Sikhs and the innocent Muslims out there... i think they will be feeling alot of pressure in the time to come.... my prayers and wishes are that TRUTH prevails in all of this.... and that TRUE Justice comes.... Guest guest
I can understand your frustration in this. What is really disturbing is that the last major terrorist attack in America was performed by an American.....Timothy McVey. Not all acts of terrorism come from over seas. One thing is clear. Whoever did this has no regard for human life whatsoever...including their own. I am just so saddened that these individuals have been so brainwashed to believe that this was the right thing to do....so many wasted lives...so many families have been forever broken and scarred. My heart goes out to all of you. ///(*_*)\\\ >LadyOStars >Kundaliniyoga >Kundaliniyoga > arrest in Rhode Island/Off Topic >Wed, 12 Sep 2001 17:48:45 EDT > >Sat Nam! > >I wanted to write to ask about this last night but thought perhaps i would >seem like i was "stereotyping" by some of my remarks... but now i think its >relevant.. >(i was also concerned that it was "off topic" of KY, but thought this would >effect some of the members here... but if you wish not to post this i >understand) > >I wanted to ask if any of the Sikhs out there felt threatened by the events >that just happened... Guest guest
As someone from overseas, I was wondering when that would occur to some of you. Its funny but here the word karma is being bandied about - like the American sponsored terrorist attacks in Nicaragua which killed 30,000. I think that the word Karma is being misused in this sense, because we all try to encapsulate every bad situation - but generalizations don't work. A persons race, or creed or beliefs does not automatically make them a bad person. Bad things always happen when one person or nation tries to impose their will on another - be they Americans, Arabs, Russians, Australians whatever. The Christians borrowed a saying out of India - "do unto others as you would have them do unto you" if the world at least followed this rule, we would live in a different place. Meditation and yoga at least allows us to find peace within, and from that peace we can spread it to others. So lets spread some peace as these troubled times continue... Namaste H. Guest guest
Dear Dharam Singh and all... i live in north smithfield... i used to practice k yoga at the Ashram in Millis when i worked nearby there.... i am planning on going to the festival in october too if anyone from the list is going, let me know! the latest update is that he has been released... but he was charged with "concealing a weapon" his lawyer (glad he's got one!) talked on tv and said his client was very "peaceful" throughout the whole ordeal, very cooperative... he tried to explain the signifigance of the knife but it was clear that the lawyer didnt fully understand it either by his language.... they said that people were chasing the police car yelling "kill him kill him!" and he remained calm during the whole event... i believe this will not make national news because its a blunder... but i think this is going to happen all over.. not just to sikhs but to the non-violent islamic community in the US..... its a shame.... here are the links to the local news here... lets all bring peace to our hearts now.... I, like you , I presume, was and am totally horrified at the acts that occurred yesterday. This country, USA, has been dealt a very serious and damaging blow by very cowardice people hiding behind religion. I will add, any religion or people that directs or condones this kind of action has no truth! Fanatics are not religious or spiritual. It is understandable that some people may be acosted by authorities if they fit a specific profile and are carrying a knife in public at this time. I pray that common sense will prevail on all sides of this issue. The word racism used as a ploy or in ignorance is divisive and demeans ones person. Racism implies the existance of different species of human beings. We must always strive to promote the truth that we are all one people. I will follow YB's direction and practice my sadhana to help facilitate Gods healing for all with love and forgiveness. Guest guest
You are correct. There are a like of crazy people out there. Just as crazy as the folks cheering the tragedy. I had to watch my back in '95 after Oklahoma. I am not imagining that this time it'll be any easier. I am not projecting fear. I don't leave my house unless my aura is intact. I am taking more time than usual to talk to folks. We have the "privilege" of being able to change the way people think by simple being available. But you do have to be on the watch. I've already heard stories of Indian Sikhs in Cambridge having their turbans yanked off their heads. What town do you live in? Guest guest
Hello All, I would just like to add something to this discussion. Many years ago as a young Irish woman I was treated with great suspiscion in England and singled out for searches etc. in the wakes of IRA bombings. It was very frightening ,hurtful and humiliating, but it eventually eased , as life became more normal. I would say to those poor unfortunate innocent people who find themselves singled out to bear with this situatuon with patience. People strike out when they are frightened, and in this horendous situation there is a shadowy perpetrator who will be difficult to come to grips with. This makes people more edgy then ever. Try to understand their very real fears and understand that some will lash out at whatever seems different to themselves, and forgive them for it.
