Bedtime Meditation

I have been practicing bed time meditation for some time now. Earlier I was

practicing Long Sat Nams, later I moved to Meditation to stay young and

powerful (posted on yogatech site) and then later, on advice from this mail

list I moved to SHABAD kriya.

In all these meditations my experience has been very different. All of

these make me very energetic. I guess that is one reason SHABAD was

recommended. But I have begun to notice the same effect with SHABAD as well

now. When I started I used to sleep very well. But now I become fresh and

active after the meditation. Is it something wrong that I am doing or is

such a different experience normal.

I guess I notice the effect from the fact that it takes me a very long time

to sleep after the meditation and I tend to wake up in about 4 hours.

Please advise.

I think you are experiencing the quickening. perhaps someone else could

elaborate for you. This is a good thing even though lack of sleep is not.

maybe practice yoga at a different time? I have had to. some people like to

do meditation and not the yoga exercise part of it before bed and perform

the asanas in the morning. someone that has a better suggestion please

elaborate. It's great you are feeling this though, as it sounds like you are

moving things around inside you. How are your dreams?

Dear Gowri,

Thank you for your letter. This is a very interesting case.

Then you need a different mediation.

Try left nostril breathing as a meditation before you go to bed. Make sure

you are breathing through your left nostril before you go to sleep. And

sleep on your back or on your left side which is relaxing. On your right

side you could wake yourself up.

and I tend to wake up in about 4 hours.

Our sleep cycles are 4 hours. This may be all the sleep you need. One

possibility is to get up after the four hours and do your Sadhana. Then

you will be very tired at the end of the day and go to sleep.

Those are my immediate ideas. Maybe someone else has something to add.

Let us know.

Thanks for your advise. I practice physical KY in the morning 5AM onwards

and meditate at about 10PM. I will try to meditate a little earlier in the

evening as a variation (not exactly bedtime). Well about my dreams, I don't

remember any and that has normally been the case with me. Maybe I will

start making a note of it. Would it signify something specific?

Well I tend to feel extremely sleepy after my lunch. Does it still indicate

that 4 hours should be good enough for me.

Thanks for the advise/suggestions. I will try these variations and let you

know the results.

Dear Gowri,

Yes, try to meditate before 10. Watch your inner clock. It may be easier

to go to sleep about 10 and after that you wake up.

Not necessarily. Now that you have given your schedule I would say get to

bed at 10 and see what time you wake up. Experiment.

Maybe a half hour nap after lunch would be good. Yogi Bhajan says we should

lie on our left side for 10 minutes after lunch to digest our food. And

check out what works for you. More than 30 is often too much.
