Guest guest
Greetings Everyone! I have an inflammatory disease that causes me to have chronic fevers. This has forced me to drop my hatha yoga practice completely. I have turned to Kundalini Yoga (and Ayurvedic medicine) for healing. KY is very new to me. Does anyone have suggestions for beginning a KY practice with emphasis on cooling the internal fire? At this point, I am only doing sitting meditation and breathing exercises (cooling ones, of course!). Any advice would be much appreciated! Guest guest
I am assuming you'e doing Sitali breath. Inhaling through your curled tongue and exhaling through the nose. Do it for 11 minutes. Left nostril breathing may be helpful also. getting really alkaline in your diet. Juicing, doing Mung Beans and Rice (lighten up a bit on the spices) How are you dealing with this inflammatory disease? Guest guest
Thank you for the suggestions and the concern. My condition was brought on two consective pregnancies (my daughters are exactly a year apart) which compounded the internal heat that pregnancy generates. This excess heat has created an inflammatory process and an autoimmune disorder. I am seeing a team of specialists at Mayo Clinic who are about to put their hands up and say that I have Lupus or "another connective tissue disease." If that happens, there is no treatment for it. It is simply managed with drugs that suppress the hyperactive immune system. These drugs are quite toxic and have devastating side effects. (Like blindness!) I believe that there are other ways to calm one's immune system and heal oneself. I have been making dietary changes since July (using principles of Ayurveda). I hope to begin working with an Ayurvedic Practitioner soon. I was not sure for how long one should do the Sitali breath. I was not doing it for long enough. I have been doing alternate nostril breathing but have never done just the left side. Should I do it for the same amount of time? 11 minutes? Right now, my liver is inflammed and it is really uncomfortable for me to sleep on my right side. Should I be sleeping on my right side- to have the left nostril open while I sleep? (My fevers tend to go up at night.) According to hatha yoga, when one is ill they should restrict their practice to a "restorative one." However, even restorative poses are heating. Are there any kriyas that are particularly cooling? Since I wake up with a fever, is there a wake up series that is cooling? and easy to do that will set the navel? (The wake up series in Transition to a Heart Centered World is really hard for me right now and seems to further aggravate the fire breathing dragon inside of me.) Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. Sat Nam, gwen
Guest guest
Dear Gwen, Have you seen an accupunturist? Chinese herbs sound like a very useful piece. > I was not sure for how long one should do the Sitali breath. As long as you like. I suggest doing it as a mediation for 11, 15, 22 or 31 minutes. > have never done just the left side. Should I do it for the same amount of > time? 11 minutes? Yes, if you can hold your hand up that long. Right now, my liver is inflammed and it is really > uncomfortable for me to sleep on my right side.
