Guest guest
Sat Nam! I am wondering if anyone has ever experienced this... Usually, when I try to fall asleep, i lie on my right side, block my right nostril and do slow breathing through left nostril. However, for the past few months, i notice that i get very restless when I lie on the right side, and find it easier to fall asleep when I do this exercise while lying on the left side, blocking left nostril... shouldn't breathing through the right nostril energize me rather than help me to fall asleep? Is is possible that some energy polarities switched in me or something? what could cause this to happen? and should it be fixed and how? Any thoughts appreciated... Guest guest
Hi SatPurkhKaur, The best explanation of laterality I've ever heard is in "The Science of Breath" by Swami Rama, Rudolph Ballentine, and Alan Hymes. (I highly recommend this book, it has excellent physiological information along with yogic science.) Here's what they recommend for sleeping on pg 67: "Traditionally, too, it is said that when individuals go to bed, they should lie on the left side for five or ten minutes, activating the right nostril to create increased body heat. As soon as they are warm and comfortable, they should turn to the right, allowing the left nostril to open. Doing so relaxes, calms, and prepares them for sleep." It sounds as if you began to do that instinctively -- maybe in response to seasonal changes in temperature(?). I once asked a doctor friend about sleeping, and he said, just do what ever is comfortable. Listen to the body. He is a very holistic doctor, with a lot of knowledge of eastern medicine. shoshana
Guest guest
Thanks Beth, that is some really solid info. I often have slept on my right side to encourage left nostril breathing and/but there were times when I would want to go onto my leftside because somehow it felt "more comfortable" and I would lay there for sometime and then I ended up back on my rightside. "It's not just a body, it's an adventure" Swami Rama is one of the great ones. Swami Rama also did a book on Japji, the first of the Sikh Banis and in it he gives some real good info on breath Sat Nam, Dharam Beth Buchwach wrote: > Hi SatPurkhKaur, > The best explanation of laterality I've ever heard is in "The Science of > Breath" by Swami Rama, Rudolph Ballentine, and Alan Hymes.
