I not an expert on either music or overtone chanting but as I understand it two notes close to each other can amplify each other. A hum done the right way will make various parts of the body resonate at different frequencies which then interact. Overtone chanting is a technique most people need to be taught how to do. It is used by Tibetan monks. When we chant in KY practice there is some resonance in the body but not as much as in overtone chanting. > Frances >

Thanks, Nirmal Kaur REPLY FROM pvsc Over tone Chanting : The chanting or delivery of the words created from the Vocal cords and with the source of energy emanated from the Energy centre located at the Neck region. The words spell out will have sound energy in built in to that. This sound energy received by our mind will have positive and negative impulse. That means if we listen to a good music or good words from people we feel much satisfied. Similarly any one utters a bad word or bad and huge noice we feel irritated because mind does not accept the same or react negatively. The words will have magic powers because the words will have immense influence on the mind. That is the reason people wish to follow the good virtues because some famous and sacred/pious individuals have told. Similarly If during the meditation if Overtone chanting of some sacred words spelled out after some time you feel the mind is concentrating on the words and then the type of sound and the sound pervading all over the place. Once we go deep into meditation that the sound create a vibrant divine spell all our body and some special imaginary thoughts and scenes witness in the subconcious mind. This state of mind will have a stability and equilibrium. with love. PVS.CHANDRA

Guest guest
Just a little more on overtone chanting. I'm a Speech/Language Pathologist, so I'm familiar with the anatomy of the vocal mechanism. The overtone chanting done by Tibetan Monks is accomplished by sound resonating at the levels of the vocal cords as well as the false vocal cords which are protuberances just above the true vocal cords. Men seem to be able to achieve this effect much more easily than women because the male voice box, or larynx, is larger than the female's. Other kinds of overtone chanting can be achieved by resonating the vocal cords and simultaneously directing sound to another resonator such as the nasal cavities or oral cavity in such a way that it creates another sound or pitch of its own. The Tuvans chant in this way also. Women can achieve this sound effect too. I have tried it and it takes quite a bit of practice.
