Hatha & Kundalini -- some thoughts

I am fairly new to Kundalini but as I practice more and more, I find that it

is really its own path. Both are Yoga, but each has its own very unique

personality, techniques, etc... Sometimes I feel like KY is closer to Tai

Chi or Chi Gong than Hatha Yoga!

I have a very dedicated Hatha yoga practice which helps me maintain physical

therapy for a couple of old injuries, and ultimately helps me with my

sitting practice for meditation.

Traditionally, the sole purpose of Hatha Yoga is to detox the body and keep

it supple so that one can sit for meditation for long periods of time

without being distracted by physical discomfort.

It's hard to express what the difference is between Hatha and Kundalini, but

in many ways, they are just that -- completely different. Kundalini accesses

the energy of the body more than the musculature. It's like working from the

inside out, instead of the outside in. Although I do experience a lot of

prana movement and change through Hatha Yoga, it is more direct and

efficient through the Kundalini. Sometimes after a single 3-minute KY

exercise, I feel more energized and more purified than I do after a

90-minute Hatha class!

Also I think it's fine if people come to Kundalini through Hatha. Hatha is

often more accessible to Westerners and gives them a foundation that

prepares them for the more intense energy work, the spiritual and esoteric

nature and some of the more bizarre exercises of Kundalini! :)

SAT NAM!
