When playing the Gong, is there a precise, way to play, or does one play instinctvely? If you were to play a Gong for ending a class in meditation, would it matter how it was played... in essence is there a right or wrong way to play? Guest guest
Hi Linda According to Sat Jiwan Singh, whose recording, "Song of the Sacred Gong" is available from www.yogatech.com (and selling well too) the CD is very like the real thing in effect, but I think a lot will depend on the quality of your sound system. I don't think it would work on a personal CD player, for example, but if you have a reasonable quality hi-fi system, then the effects should be very powerful and very penetrating, and I would presume, adjustable by use of the volume control. You can check out the sound clip on the site - if you have good speakers on your computer sound system, then the 2 minutes or so on there should give you a taste for the full recording. Sat Nam! Guest guest
Sat Nam Linda, With a good system you can get up to 80% of the effect. Regarding playing the Gong there are a few do's and don'ts. There are specific techniques for working on different aspects. The one thing you never do is strike it with anything but a glancing action....never strike it straight on. This is instruction directly from Yogiji. He calls it an insult and an offense. When I first started playing the Gong I would get the effects even though my intention was for the benefit of the students. There is a limited publication of "The Art of the Gong" by Gurucharan Singh. Do you have a gong or access to one? Guest guest
I have done both and you do get the same effect. There are many ways to play the gong to get different effects. So how you play it does make a difference. There is a video of Yogi Bhajan playing the gong. Ram Rattan and I watching it for the first time both were put into a trance. We watched it sitting on the couch. Yogiji starts playing and says "This will put you into a trance" (or something like that). When the tape ended we both found ourselves awaking with our heads leaning back against the couch! The next time we watched it we stood up so we could see what happened. I should mention that the speaker quality of that particular TV is very poor. So I would conclude that the way you play it must be very important. I have hear Gurucharan Singh play it in different ways for different meditations. If you get a gong of your own I would recommend getting the gong video of Yogiji teaching about it. It was very helpful, but only a beginning. And stand up when you watch it for the first time!
Guest guest
Sat Nam Linda! While I can't answer all of your questions I wanted to share that the gong done on Thursday was distinctively different from that on Tuesday. Tuesday's left me energized while Thursday's sent me into a sleep. My teacher, Amrit, stated that the song she was playing Thursday was one she learned by Yogi Bungen (spelling wrong, sorry). It had a name, but can't remember it now.
