Guest guest
Dear Lanzone, as a young (34 yrs) male teacher, I am teaching mostly younger expat wifes here in Shanghai. Occasionally there joins also a male partner and I always have the impression, that the energy level in the room is then different / higher when teaching mixed genders. Personally I don't feel any gender bias while lessons. I ALWAYS repeat the teachers oath before class --> forget about gender, forget about sexuality, forget about yourself while teaching. And while teaching, I avoid touching the ladies (i.e. correcting postures), nor make any comments re physical abilities. I also avoid personal compliments, just as general comments for all of them. I think it is utmost important to create a neutral, 'gender-free' atmosphere in the class, the ladies realize this and so far they feel pretty comfortable. The only thing I realize is, that one husband seems to be somehow uncomfortable / jealous (?), that I am able to distract his wife from preparing dinner for him one evening a week. I invited him to join also the class, but he refused... But to my opinion, this is a personal problem in the relationship of this lady and her husband. The other thing I notice, is that most male students come with some reservations into class - particular that yoga has some 'girlish' touch. Not really a men-thing (you know: building up muscles, stamina, shaping belly, sweating, lifting weights and all this stuff, etc.). All this meditation, singing of mantra's, stretching and 'funny' exercises (e.g. lion pose with tongue full out of the mouth, etc. etc.). But normally they change their minds pretty quick - esp. when we do a little bit of stretch pose ;-) Sat Nam, Ardash Singh
Guest guest
Ardash, You have a great attitude for teaching, I bet the women appreciate what you are teaching them. Guest guest
Sat Nam Everyone, For some reason the men do not stay. All of the students in my classes are women. I really wondered if it had something to do with me and how I relate to men. If anyone can give an explanation as to why the men do not continue I would appreciate it. Now I just let it go. Who is meant to be there will be there. Sincerely yours Hari Sant Singh Kindness has no defeat. Caring has no end. Guest guest
Sat Nam, Ninety-five per cent of the people in my classes and in my healing practice are women. The few men sometimes get offputted by that; sometimes they just don't relate to the relaxation and meditation component. Sometimes they hate having a teacher tell them what to do (groan......). Sometimes they can't relate or don't want to relate to the feelings that come up. Sometimes they don't like groups. I therefore conclude.......... it has something to with conditioning, and with the fact that women have a much stronger etheric element in them. I think that no matter what kind of kundalini yoga you do that tattva is pressured to expand a lot. So men either feel uncomfortable/insecure or have trouble riding the wave so easily. The men that I do have are usually top notch at keeping up and doing their own study outside of class and those men are usually real independent thinkers and more secure at the spiritual level. I sense a discussion starting.............. Gordon Price wrote: > Sat Nam Everyone, > For some reason the men do not stay. All of the students in my classes are women. Guest guest
Dear Hari Sant Singh, Keep in mind that women are said to be 16 times more powerful than men... They also have a greater appreciation for the more subtle things in life, such as the benefits of kundalini yoga practice. Guys tend to be much more "immediate results" oriented -- if they/we don't get some kind of rush (high) or serious challenge to their/our masculinity (a really tough set), they figure "oh, who cares" and move on. For now, I believe you've already said it best: "Who is meant to be there will be there." In the future, the next time you get a man or two in your class, try teaching either "the Rocketship high set" (ask Sukhmandir Singh of Salinas, CA for the details) or perhaps the "Meditation on the Sun," a 31 minute set best done at summer solstice but useful at noon on any other day. The meditation will ABSOLUTELY give the participants a serious "buzz," one so powerful it will be totally impossible to ignore. At THAT point (either way) you will have the attention of even the dumb brutes! gs Guruprem Singh ('GS') Khalsa 408-396-7249 cell, 24 hrs. Guest guest
Sat Nam, Could you please post those two sets you mention, or be more specific about where they can be found. Guest guest
If women are 16 times more powerful than men how come men rule the world? And I heard this the other day, a study shows men don't know how to tie shoelaces so they stay tied...Mmmm, another reason why women would do a better job! I think you would have to teach boys how to do Kundalini Yoga early on because I find most men will not change after they reach 21. Only the enlightened males of our world appreciate yoga and powerful women. Deanna on West Island *************************************** ~*~Ann Landers has designated April 2 as Reconciliation Day.
