Guest guest
Hello, I was asked to post an introduction, so here goes - My name is Dee, I am a biologist and college instructor who lives in Southcentral PA, USA. I am fortunate enough to live in a rather remote area (for being PA) on about 70 acres of wooded land. My passion is cats and I run a small private feline sanctuary where I have the privilege of caring for approximately 40 feral and abandoned cats. In 1998, I began re-focusing on the spiritual side of life once again, after focusing on returning to college and grad school for some years, as well as beginning a new career. Last year, my daughter and only child, Shawnee died unexpectedly. She was 24 years old. It was a great shock. My beliefs have managed to allow me to function in this world without the need for drugs or psychotherapy, although there are still dark moments. Anyway, while I function quite well, I have lost most of my desire to do anything beyond what is necessary. My body is a reflection of this -- I have definitely gained weight and feel completely unbalanced. At one time, I was quite fit, I enjoyed biking, weight-training and low-impact aerobics. Those do not appeal to me now. Then I remembered how I was "into" Hatha Yoga when I was a teenager, and many of the same principles and practices proved helpful when I studied Kung Fu for several years. I think I would like to try Yoga again and found your site, so here I am. Oh and about my signature, if it is considered SPAM, please let me know and I will drop it. The link goes to our cat sanctuary which I officially named in honor of my daughter's memory - the Shawnee Om Shanti Cat Sanctuary (SOS for short). Guest guest
Many thanks for the warm welcomes I have received. I look forward to learning more about Kundalini Yoga. By the way, is Kundalini pronounced the way it is spelled? I like the fact that two people wrote that I am meant to be here. Yesterday, I looked around the site some more and I am excited about starting the lessons. I am considering buying a video, any recommendations for a good first video? I would like to start with breathing exercises and simple stretching. I am going to download the Real Audio so I hear what the mantras (chants?) sound like. I have always had great difficulty in meditating, but I am going to try again! Since my daughter died, I noticed how many things have taken on a new significance. Yesterday, she prompted me to go look at the "pinkie" clouds that we both adored, as the sun was setting. I really appreciate the warm welcome I have received from this group! Guest guest
Hi Dee Glad to hear you are enjoying your new surroundings! :-) For simple breathing and stretching exercises you could try Nirvair Singh's beginners' videos - each one lasts 2 hours and contains 2 complete 1 hour lessons. They were originally produced as part of a course from the University of Alaska, where Nirvair has taught KY for many years. Lessons 1 & 2 will get you started. Some folk buy them singly, others 2 at a time and some buy the complete set of 6 to take advantage of volume discounts. You can read all about them at and buy them from the online store. Some of Ravi Singh's videos as well as the video from Jagdish are also suitable for beginners. Sat Nam!
