4. SAI PHILOSOPHY:

SAI PHILOSOPHY FROM THE DIARY OF SAI.BA.NI.SA.

These messages are the outcome and essence of the dream sequences of

Saibanisa as given by Lord Sainath, which reflect the Sai Philosophy

and his high thinking. They carry a sense of deep meaning and are

generally thought provoking, enough to set one's thinking process.

Translated and presented by RAGHU RAMAN SATULURY

91) 31st January, 1997: Even if you are on the right path, people

around you subject you at times to torture. Interact only to the

extent required, as it is the order of the day.

92) 20th February 1997: When others are enjoying wealth earned

through wrong means, do not entertain even a passing thought that it

is going to be permanent. Do not be attracted towards them if you

want to live in peace.

93) 28th February 1997: All near and dear (wife and children) have a

share in your good deeds but not in your bad deeds. So why be a

party to such a situation.

94) 28th February 1997: When "TRUTH" is a saleable commodity today,

why do you expect punishing those "ERRING". Sooner or later GOD will

punish them.

95) 8th March 1997: Low tides and high tides are common phenomena

while on the sea. Still the travel continues. So is the journey

through life.

Letter - 36 (Chapter 38)

Dear Chakrapani,

Sri Hemadri Pant elaborated, in this chapter, on Annadanam (offering

of food to hungry) performed by Sri Sai at Shirdi, details of

utensils used by HIM for preparing the food, the way HE cooked the

Naivedyam (items of food offered to GOD) and the abundant LOVE Sri

Sai had for Sri Hemadri Pant. All aspects of performing Annadanam

have clearly been explained in this chapter. It is said - Feeding

the hungry & poor (Annadanam) is the best amongst all varieties of

charity-. I will now mention as an example two individuals, known to

me, whose name comes to my mind while discussing this matter. First

name is that of Mrs. Docca Seethamma, resident of Vakkalanka (a

village near my native place in Konaseema area of coastal Andhra

Pradesh), who had spent all her wealth on performing Annadanam

(feeding the hungry and poor) and thus earned the name of Annapoorna

(name of a Goddess of Benares / Varanasi / Kasi who is provider of

food to all) in Konaseema area. She herself used to cook the items

of food and feed all persons visiting the village, without

differentiating whether they are relatives, strangers and are of any

caste. This fact was even noticed by the then British Government

ruling India. She never cared for her own health and continued to

cook, even when she was unwell, and performed Annadanam. Her

generous nature and blessedness are thus evident. The second name is

that of Sri Upadhyayula Pereswara Somayajulu, husband of my maternal

aunt. He did not have any children of his own, but he gathered many

children of his relatives, under his roof providing them with

shelter and bore the entire expenditure on account of their

education and food. Thus he was a great soul who did Vidyadanam

(charity towards education) and Annadanam (charity towards providing

food).

I humbly state that I was one amongst those children who grew up

under his roof. Sri Somayajulu uncle was fighting for his life and

was on the deathbed on 29 January1991. That day was Grihapravesam

(house warming ceremony or ritual of entering a new house for the

first time) and he inquired, from his sick bed, whether each and

every 200 invitees for the Annadanam had properly been fed. You can

see that even at the last moments of his life he was concerned that

Annadanam be performed without any fault. He merged in Sri Sai on 30

January 1992 Thursday at 1:20 PM Ekadasi (an auspicious day of Hindu

lunar month) after hearing the afternoon Harati. Isn't this the

result of his performing Annadanam? Now I will write about an

incident that occurred in my life while performing Annadanam, so

read on carefully. That day 17 October 1991 was Vijaya Dashami (last

day of Hindu festival Dussera) and I prayed to Sri Sai, after the

morning Harati, from the bottom of my heart saying - Baba grant me

an opportunity to feed at least 10 people in my house today. I will

eat only after feeding 10 people-. This was the vow taken by me that

morning. I performed the afternoon Harati. Invited guests and

visitors started arriving at our house for lunch. By 3 PM 9 guests

have been fed and I did not have my meal as yet. I had vowed before

Sri Sai that I will eat only after feeding 10 individuals and I was

determined to keep my word. 10th guest did not arrive and it was 4

PM in the evening. Even your mother finished her meal and my

determination to fulfill my vow increased. A fleeting thought

crossed my mind that couldn't Sri Sai send 10 individuals to my

house for a meal? I had been fasting since morning, was suffering

from hunger pains in my stomach and was in mental agony, as the 10th

guest did not arrive. Not knowing what to do, I looked at Sri

Sainath's portrait with sad eyes. HIS bewitching smile was testing

my patience. If the saying that Sri Sai never permitted anyone to

fast was true, then why am I in this situation with hunger on this

day? What is the significance of the bewitching smile on Sri Sai's

face when I am suffering from hunger pains? I needed answers to

these 2 questions and was wondering on whom to approach for the

answers. At that moment my eyes fell on the book titled Sai Baba of

Shirdi - a Unique Saint written by MV Kamath & VB Kher, bought by me

on 16 October 1991, in the bookshelf in front of me. I opened the

bookshelf, took that book in my hand, praying wholeheartedly to Sri

Sai - You came to my house yesterday in

the form of this new book and I can visualize you in this book. You

must give answers to my agonizing questions. This is not a test for

me but a test for YOU. If you like your devotee to suffer by

fasting, I can remain without food for a full one day. 10th guest

has not yet arrived at my house for a meal. I will have my meal only

after the 10th guest finishes his meal. It is for YOU to tell me

what to do now-. Praying to Sri Sai thus, I held the new book in my

hands closed my eyes and opened the book randomly.

When I opened my eyes, the book was open at page No. 135 and I

started searching for answers to my questions on that page. Sri Sai

visualized in the form of last sentence on that page and gave

answers sought by me thus - Do you want me to eat more? Go now and

have your meal-. I was filled with unexplained happiness. Did Sri

Sai himself arrive as the 10th guest in my house and had HIS meal? I

could not believe it, as I have not seen any individual arriving as

the 10th guest. I did not even see any animal coming to our house so

HE could not have come in the form an animal. I was wondering about

in which form had Sri Sai come and took HIS meal. It was then that

my eyes fell on an ant, which was circumambulating round the plate,

with food offerings, placed in front of Sri Sai's portrait. Sri

Sai's words, contained in the 9th chapter of Sri Sai Satcharitra,

came to my mind. These words were - Similarly cats, pigs, flies,

cows etc. are all my forms. I am going around in these forms. I am

present in all living beings-. I mentally paid my respects and

thanked Sri Sai, realized that Sri Sai never made HIS devotees to

undertake fasting and had my meal as 11th person at 4:45 PM on that

day. You must understand one aspect from this incident; Sri Sai

immensely liked Annadanam (feeding the hungry). Whenever and

wherever Annadanam is being performed, HE will be present there in

some form or other and blesses HIS devotees. Just observe the way

Sri Sai used to offer Naivedyam (offering food) to GOD. Devotees

used to bring various dishes & delicacies to Dwarakamayi and place

them before Sri Sai. HE used to take out a small amount from each

dish & delicacy into a vessel and offer the contents of the vessel

to GOD. What should we learn from this? GOD does not look for the

taste in dishes & delicacies offered to HIM by devotees, but looks

for the extent of devotion with which these have been offered.

That's why Sri Sai never bothered much about the taste of food

offered to HIM. HE sought only LOVE from his devotees. Before

consuming any edible item you offer the same with devotion to Sri

Sai and HE will happily accept the same. When I was meditating on a

particular day Sri Sai said - I prefer the plain and sweet Sapota

(an Indian fruit - Chikoo in Hindi - Scientific name Achras Sapota)

fruit to beautiful and tempting Pampara Panasa (an Indian fruit of

citrus genre - Scientific name Pomelmoos) fruit. Sri Sai is GOD to

all of us. What that GOD likes is a sweet Sapota called LOVE. If we

LOVE SAI, without realizing we will start loving our contemporaries

by seeing Sri Sai in them. Remember that synonym for LOVE is SAI.

In service of Sri Sai,

Your father.

8. SPIRITUAL GEMS FROM SAI SATCHARITRA:

SV.SWAMY: swamymain

5/23/2004 18:17:01 –0700

Sai Ram. We are about to take up the worship of Baba by Dr.Pandit.

Let us recapitulate or summarize briefly what we discussed in the

last issue.

The Individual Self is a part of the Universal Self (Jeevatma is an

amsa of Paramatma). Just as a drop of water, a lake, a river and the

ocean, all are made of the same water, so whether a small child, a

grown up man, woman, a Brahmin or a Sudra, all are containers for

the same essence, that of Brahman, also called as ParaBrahman to

differentiate from Brahma, the God of Creation. Most of us are

covered by Maya, illusion, which prevents us seeing things as they

really are. Just as in semi-darkness, a rope is mistaken for a snake

and produces fear in the eyes of the onlooker, the sense of I, also

called ego, produces a sense of separation in each of us, thus

limiting our perceptions and also causing various attachments and

aversions (which are negative attachments). Just as a good lamp

makes us see the rope for what it is and thus be free from fear,

Guru's grace also removes in us the sense of separation and thus

frees us from the attachments to the worldly things. The oneness of

all is demonstrated in the various incidents described in

Satcharitra and Dr.Pandit's worship of Baba and His acceptance of

the same is one such of several incidents.

"Then Dababhat left his house for Puja and Dr. Pandit accompanied

him. Dadabhat worshipped Baba. Nobody until then dared to apply

sandal paste to Baba's forehead. Only Mhalsapati used to apply it to

His throat. But this simple-hearted devout, Dr. Pandit, took

Dabadhat's dish containing Puja-materials and taking sandal-paste

out of it, drew a Tripundra, i.e. there horizontal lines on Baba's

forehead. To the surprise of all, Baba kept silent without uttering

a single word."

Sai Ram. See the greatness of Baba and the lesson that He is trying

to teach us His children. Baba did not believe in teaching through

elaborate theoretical discourses (though He makes this child of His,

me, do that sort of things!), but through practical lessons. He made

a few exceptions like the Chapter on Brahmagnan, which we will

eventually explore. The exceptions make the rule stronger. Thus this

and the next example, the previous incidents, the teaching of Isa

Upanishad to Das Ganu, there are any number of incidents used by

Baba to convey deep philosophical truths. Sai Ram. Though Baba did

not care for theoretical explanations, He, like a fond parent, did

explain His actions when genuine aspirants among His devotees asked

Him to explain. That is what He did in this case too.

"Then Dababhat that evening asked Baba, "How is it, that though You

object to the sandal-paste being applied by others to Your forehead,

but You allowed Dr. Pandit to do so now?" Baba replied that Dr.

Pandit believed Him to be the same as his Guru, Raghunath Maharaja

of Dhopeshwar, known as Kaka Puranik, and he applied the paste to

His forehead, as he was doing to his Guru. Hence He could not

object. On enquiry, Dr. Pandit told Dadabhat that he took Baba as

his Guru Kaka Puranik, and hence he marked the Tripundra on Baba's

forehead, as he did on his Guru's head."

Sai Ram. Baba was demonstrating yet again the Oneness of the

Universal Spirit, which pervades the whole manifest creation of Him.

In the unmanifest or Nirgun state, the Spirit has no shape, no size,

no form, no attributes of color, sex etc. Thus we can refer to that

Nirgun ParaBrahman as He, She or It. When it decided to manifest,

that is to take some form, it took various shapes, sizes, colors,

textures etc. But underlying all of them is the Unmanifest form

since it is Inexhaustible. That is why, Sri Vishnu Sahasranama

describes Him as the Universe and the Universal Spirit.

Sai showed that all Guru's, all Gods, all Saints are One. Sarva Deva

Namaskarah Kesava Praticgachhati (all Namskars reach Kesava).

Bhagawan Sri Krishna tells Arjuna that people worship so many

different Gods, Pitrus etc., but since He pervades all of them, He

accepts worship through those demi Gods etc.

Since Dr.Pandit was a simple and steadfast devotee of his Guru Kaka

Puranik, he saw the same Guru in Baba too. And Baba also accepted

the worship offered by Pandit to his Guru. And Sai always respected

that simplicity of a child, not the artificial humility of a devotee

who is all the time bowing his head again and again, secretly hoping

for some desires to be fulfilled by such sycophantic behaviour.

This incident was used by Baba to reinforce yet again the lesson

which He so patiently was trying to teach to all of us, look beyond

the external size shape and other external characteristics, do not

be bound by the limited sensory perceptions of sight, sound etc.,

allow your heart to connect you to the Universal Spirit so that you

too can feel unity. Like He did.

Sai Ram. We will explore in the next issue, the mock anger of Baba,

His acceptance of Haji etc. Sai Ram.

9.QUINTESSENCE OF SRI SAIBABA'S PHILOSOPHY:

(By Late Sri Bharam UmamaheswaraRao)

"Shashi": shashi_31

71. Come and carry away bags of UDHI. Come cart away the treasure of

your mother. But no one is taking. No one listens to Me. My treasury

is open. None brings carts to take from it. I say dig but none will

bother. Earth will (your body) will return to earth, air (your

breath) will return to air. This opportunity will not return. Please

have entire faith in My words. Then your object of attaining God

Realization will be accomplished.

72. My tomb will speak and move with those who make Me their refuge.

I shall be active and vigorous from My tomb also. Even after My

Samadhi, I shall be with you, the moment you think of Me from any

place. As soon as a devotee calls Me with sincere love, I will

appear. I require no train to travel. My business is to give good

things and blessings to the devotees.

73. My people first come to Me for temporal benefits. They get their

heart's desire fulfilled and, after being comfortably placed in

their life, they follow Me.

74. The devotees who recognize Me in every form and treats Me

adequately is blessed.

75. Baba said to Nana- I am the shudra. I am everything and beyond.

I was the Fakir who begged in Bombay. I was the Spirit you saw at

midnight under the tree. I pervade the earth and transcend it.

Bolted doors do not bar access to Me. I will go invisibly.

76. I am the only witness like the sun. I am neither attached nor

detached to any one. Man reaps what he sows, according to his

thoughts, words and deeds. This is the Divine law that applies to

all.

77. When you attain spiritual power, you will have Sapta Shatka in

all your actions. You will be powerful to handle the affairs. Mind

that holds on to Visayas binds you. Mind wavers. For stability of

mind acquire spiritual strength and knowledge about `SELF'. Moksha

is nothing but winning over egoism. Seek Self Realization. Knowledge

dawns on a purified mind. Control the mind.

78. Worldly life is filled with ego and attachment. Destroy them and

then only you get a philosophical bent of mind (Dharma Chaitanya).

While practicing it, try to acquire Divine Light (Paramarthika

Dristi). While practicing it, try to acquire selflessness.

Selflessness is the goal for all. God is nowhere else, but

selflessness is God.

79. Self-control brings Pari-poornatha and selflessness. Wisdom

dawns through the power of perception and comprehension. The power

evolves into the supreme refuge. Transformation comes through

selfless thoughts and spiritual strength.

80. Fasting does not give any worldly or spiritual benefits.

To be continued…

10. DEVOTEES EXPERIENCES:

Sriram Rachakonda, Singapore

Baba is everguiding and everhelping me in each and every aspect in

my life from the very next moment I started believing him. I can

say, without second thought, if today I am happy and in this

comfortable position, that is the only kindness of Baba, but not

anything else. Last time when I came to India, I went to Shirdi and

had darshan of our Sadguru Maharaj very happily. I offered 3 shawls

to Baba on behalf of my colleague in Singapore, for which he had

requested me through an email and also had told he would give the

equivalent money for the shawls once I reach Singapore back. after

some time I again came back here and given the udhi and prasad to my

colleague, but both we forgot about the money for shawls. Suddenly

after a long time he called me one day and asked me to take the

money for shawls immediately as there should not be any delay in

this kind of issues.

On the next day I went to collect the money, Rs.300 for which I

bought 3 shawls in Shirdi, from the person. Now see the miracle of

Baba!!!! At that time he had only one 10$ note and remaining some 50

$ notes with him, but no smaller notes. so he had given a 10$ note

together with some coins, summing to $11.30C. he searched and even

asked others present there, but no one had any more coins. The next

day when I saw the money exchange rates, I was astonished to know

that the sum $11.30 is exactly equivalent to 300 Indian Rupees. how

great and kind of Baba? he doesn't want me to remain with 'runa' (in

loan to) and this incident proves he is omnipresent & omnipotent

even after attaining Samadhi.

11. SAI WITH CHILDREN:

http://www.saidarbar.org/HTML/portraits/7.jpg

Smt. Madhu Gopal Ravada, Saidarbar, Hyderabad.

Hello Children! I am Madhu aunty. Do you know Baba use to play with

children and used to tell stories to them? I felt children visiting

Saidarbar should be entertained with good stories. I have told you

24 stories during the year 2003. Baba told before He took His Maha

Samadhi that He is Muralidhar and would like to play in Booty Wada

(Samadhi Mandir) with His devotees. So I started Krishna Leelas with

effect from the first issue of New Year 2004. Study well and learn

good manners. Tell your parents to read the Glory of Shirdi Sai -

Fortnightly E-magazine and narrate Krishna Leelas from this

magazine.

THE FRUIT SELLER:

It was the afternoon of summer. It was very hot that

day. Krishna was playing in his courtyard when he heard the familiar

voice of the fruit seller outside. "Fruits, fresh juicy fruits."

Krishna immediately ran inside on his legs and came out with some

rice in his hands. But his little fingers could not hold much rice

and most of it slipped through. This pleased the fruit seller and he

gave one fruit of each kind to Krishna. Krishna smiled and then

touched the basket of fruits with his finger and ate the fruits

given by the fruit seller.

The Fruit seller left. She was thinking about the charming child.

She put down the basket and when she looked at her basket her eyes

opened wide in surprise when she found that her fruit basket was all

full of precious gems like ruby, emeralds and diamonds. The glitter

of the gems filled her room. A mere touch of Krishna's finger had

turned the fruits into gems. Such was his power. In Gokul it was

almost daily that a strange incident would happen and in each of

them Krishna was involved.

NATURE'S LAWS

Baba said, "We have to reap now the fruit of what we sow in our past

life, and there is no use of crying about it now" in Sri Sai

Satcharitra, Ch. XLVI.

One must clearly understand that there is no carry over of credit or

debit of our deeds in the book of account with God's bank. At the

end, all accounts must be closed with zero balance based on our

actions and reactions. Remember we are always under His vigilant eye

of supervision, not a fraction of second passes without his

superintendence. Even though all are bestowed with 6th sense, many

in this Kali-yuga never consider its advice prior to take up any

negative deed. Because of this the society is voluntarily inviting

so many miseries and difficulties. Every wrong action or crime

brings its own punishment in accordance with the law of retribution.

The nature's laws such as the law of causation, the law of action

and reaction, the law of compensation and the law of retribution -

all operate together. He who hurts another man, hurts himself first.

Remember that God is neither partial nor unjust. Remember that God

is not responsible for the wealth of one man or the poverty of

another.

We suffer on account of our own wicked actions. There is nothing

chaotic or capricious in this world. Things do not happen in this

universe by accident or chance in a disorderly manner. They happen

in regular succession and events follow each other in a regular

order. There is a kind of definite connection between what is being

done now by us and what will happen in the future. Sow always the

seeds, which will bring pleasant fruits and which will make us happy

herein and hereafter. If we take an individual life as an isolated

event, which begins with birth of the physical body and terminates

with its death we cannot find any correct explanation or solution

for the affairs of life. We will be groping in darkness and despair.

Our present life is nothing, when compared with the whole soul-

life. It is momentary - a mere fragment. If we want to find the

cause or antecedent for anything, we will have to go deep into the

affairs of the eternal soul-life. Then alone there will be perfect

balance of cause and effect, antecedent and consequence. Life does

not end with the disintegration of this physical body alone. There

is reincarnation. There had been countless previous lives also. We

will have to take into consideration the widest view of the life of

the soul. Then we will find a perfect, satisfactory solution for all

the intricate and complicated affairs of life.

The law of compensation operates everywhere in nature's phenomena.

The seed breaks and a large tree arises from the seed. Fuel burns.

Fuel is destroyed. But there is heat, in accordance with the law of

compensation. When we relate these in our life, there is re-

confirmation from Baba, which is an eye opener for us, "Debt, enmity

and murder have to be atoned for, as there is no escape from them"

in Sri Sai Satcharitra, Ch. XXXVI. We will see that this law of

compensation is operating everywhere in the phenomena of nature. It

is inexorable and immutable. No one can defy this relentless and

irresistible law. If we do an evil act, we will reap a bad fruit in

compensation. Then, where is the solution for this complex

phenomenon? We can find Baba's compensation formula in Sri Sai

Satcharitra that will help to overcome our karmic balance: "If

anyone does any evil unto you, do not retaliate. (Ch.X). Sai Mother

is always more considerate and compassion on us, let us listen to

Her words of Mercy "Why should you take the responsibility of the

actions on you? Do not entertain the sense of doership in doing

good, as well as bad deeds (Ch. L) whatever happens, is divinely

ordained and hence, it is good for us."(Ch.XX)"

Shirdi Sai Baba: wallingfordsai

Dear Sai Bandhu

On May 15, 2004 the Darbar and Satsangh was hosted by SB* Vijay and

Sumathi family. This was the first time Darbar was organized in a

public place, in a local community clubhouse, to accommodate large

number of members. Darbar started with Ganesh Mantram followed by

Guru Mantram, Ashtothram, Bhajan, Study Circle (reading Satcharita

Chapter 14), Aarti, Food Prayer and Maha Prasad. With His grace and

blessings, we had a wonderful evening. Darbar also welcomed new

members and were introduced to all other existing members.

Prior to Darbar, Children had a practice session for the Annual Day

function, while all committee members discussed and finalized a date

for Annual Day function, agenda and list of action items for the

Annual Day function. There was a tremendous response from most

members and children for volunteering in executive committee.

We invite you with your family and interested friends for the

upcoming Sai Darbar and Satsang to be held at our Sai Bandu Senthil

and Kanchana'sresidence on 29-May-2004..
