Today (April 9, 2005) is the first day of Vasant

Navaratri (the Springtime Nine-Nights of the Goddess).

This first night is sacred to Shailaputri, whose name

means, "The Daughter of the Mountain Peak."

My Uma is no common maid, says Menaka.

Thy daughter, O Giri, Mountain King,

Is not that, she is not that.

I am afraid to tell what I have seen in a dream.

Oh, our Uma sat upon the heads of Four-faced Brahma

and Five-faced Shankara.

A Queen of Kings, she speaks with laughing lips.

Dark Vishnu, who rides the eagle,

Stands humbly in her presence,

With palms pressed together in supplication.

Ramprasad says: This is she whom even sages cannot

win by meditation. Blessed art thou, O Giri! What

merit hast thou achieved to possess such a daughter.

Om Shailaputri namostute!
