anityatrptA : Satisfied with the perishable [offerings]

because she is pleased only by devotion.

Or, aniti [lit breath] jivas, atrptA; not satisfied. Because in the

Sruti [Katha. Up. II. 25] it is said , "That both brAhmana and

ksatriya are Its food.

Or she is pleased with everything [na-iti. atrptA; here two

negatives make the ordinary meaning forcible]. The Bh-gitA [iX.

26], "He who offers with devotion a leaf, a flower, a fruit, or

water, I accept from the striving Self" The meaning is whatever is

given with devotion gives her satisfaction.

She is satisfied with transient offerings, provided there is

devotion behind them. The 16 offerings of worship (such as sandal-

paste, etc.) are inconsequential in themselves, as She is pleased

with them if they are offered with faith and devotion.

Sahasranama, 1962
