Guest guest
Sat Nam EveryONE... I'm suffering from bad summer allergies at the moment... I've had it all my life. In the past I have tried all the prescription medications but they don't help. At the moment I'm trying a homeopathic remedy with Allium Cepa, Euphrasia Officianalis and Sabadilla Officinarum. The symptoms include itchy swollen eyes, continuous runny nose and sneezing.. sometimes with prickly heat syndrome. Thanks to my yoga and meditation practice thesedays I managed to stay relaxed which ==definitely== helps reduce the symptoms.. but it makes me very tired after a whole afternoon of sneezing!!! Does anyone know why some people have allergies and others don't? Is it related to the immune system? Has anyone had experience with having practiced KY for a long time and having allergies get better? Any advice yogic diet.. kriyas or otherwise would be much much appreciated... :-) Brightest Blessings.. Guest guest
Hi Krishan-I too have had allergies since childhood when my mutually suffering father would "dr" me with the horrible stuff "Allerest"! For the past 30 years I have tried everything from pressing Iris flower petals on my nostrils (when I was 8) to the deadly now banned "Seldane". Nothing really cured me-if I could breathe, I was a zombie or so jazzed that I was only sleeping 2 hrs per night. I did outgrow the fall allergies but have contended w/ spring allergies for over 3 decades! For 2 1/2 months out of every year I was "barely breathing". Two years ago I read an article in "GreatLife" by Karta Purkh Singh Khalsa called "Nix it with Nettles". It saved my life! I had tried stinging nettle before but it had no effect. But when I followed Karta's directions, the effect was immediate & amazing. I could BREATHE-no sneezing, no runny nose etc. The only thing not eased by nettle for me is the dry, red eyes. Originally I was taking the 3,000 mgs but now I only need half that! In short, Karta's recommendation is: "Start taking 500 mg. of nettles. Wait 5-10 minutes & repeat dose. Continue taking every 5-10 minutes until symptoms subside. Once the effective dose is found, continue taking every 4 hours as needed to control allergy symptoms. The average dose is 3,000 mg. every 4 hours". And by the way, I have only been doing KY since FEB2002 but my yoga teacher advised me to try BOF for allergies & I have found that since I have increased my lung capacity this way, it too has helped! Sat Nam, Sally PS-Also, to soothe nasal passages,I use squirts of pure saline-haven't learned to use a neti yet but it's on the list! >>I'm suffering from bad summer allergies at the moment... Guest guest
Sat Nam, I have a great deal of experience with this, having suffered from childhood also, and also treating many people in the wholistic clinic where I work. For people with childhood onset hayfever the combination homeopathic remedies often don't work, although sometimes you get lucky. There are a couple of chinese herbal products that work for some people. If you can't find them in a chinese herb shop I will send you the titles and ingrediant list if you like. A tube of "pollens 30" each week thoroughout the season helps a lot of people. Histaminum 9c taken 2 or 3 times a day also helps a lot of people. Beyond those recommendations you are looking at consitutional treatment with homeopathy which works really well. I am 80 to 90 per cent better. First you have to detox from the antihistamins. Then find the main remedy for you and a few other remedies to knock out some of the perhiphereal obstacles in your immune system. It takes a while but progress is slow and steady. Kundalini yoga has no direct response to this problem. Until recently hayfever was virtually unknown in India and China. Yogi Bhajan once recommended black peppercorn tea (its a blood cleanser). The most important thing is to relax, and then use your meditative mind to become aware of the underlying emotions. Hayfever is largely a way of clearing emotional congestion, aggravated by genetic tendencies and environmental toxins and other immune system stressors. It also helps to lover your intake of mucous causing foods during the hayfever season: dairy food and wheat for instance. It is also possible to get a blood test and find out what substances/foods you are slightly allergic/sensitive to and by eliminating/lowering your intake of those you help your immune system also. As you see it is a complex problem. However, the energy needed to manage it and unravel it is certainly worth it. Medication just makes the problem worse in the long run. Keep up, and write me back on or off the list to let me know how you are doing. Guest guest
Sat Nam Suresh, You said that for your allergies you tried 'Laghoo shankha prakshalan', is that a pranayama? _Also control your diet by eating more of cooling foods and avoiding / _reducing heating ones. What kind of yogic 'heating' and 'cooling' foods do you suggest? Guest guest
Sat Nam Sally, Thanks for the reference to Karta Singh's Nettle remedy, _In short, Karta's recommendation is: "Start taking 500 mg. of nettles. _Wait 5-10 minutes & repeat dose. The _average dose is 3,000 mg. every 4 hours". What form of nettles does he suggest? Freeze-dried, in capsules? I bought nettles a few years ago upon the suggestion of a friend but found it didn't really help, 300mg capsules, but perhaps wasn't taking a high enough dose, frequent enough. Thanks for the Breath of Fire suggestion I'll give that a go. Guest guest
Krishan-Karta recommends capsule form of the herb..."Nettle loses its medicinal power if not harvested & processed correctly. Look for a high-quality powdered product that has been freeze-dried or specially processed to retain the active chemicals in the plant. This special processing costs more, so don't be seduced by cheap imitations." I use Frontier brand cryogenically grown organic nettle leaf (435 mg)- & I urge you to give his dosage recommendation a try! When I orignally tried nettle, I didn't take enough either but when you find your personal dose you will be truly amazed! If you are interested in a copy of Karta's article, email me off-line & I will send it to you.
