Guest guest
Sat Nam all yoginis and yogis, There's been alot posted the last week or two about meditation. > "I'ld like to know what would have happened had I not been afraid. -- I'ld like to know what I should have done," -A common theme, which EVERYONE experiences I believe (I did), is what are all the pretty sensations, and colors, and images, and what can I do to keep 'experienceing' them. THERE JUST A SIDESHOW! Like Gururattan said, just 'be with them' whatever it is, and let them pass. If they were important, you'd see a description for them in the instructions, thats a clue, DON'T BE FOOLED... I had lots of pretty stuff happen early on, but 95% of the time nothing spectacular happens during my meditations, and I don't look for it. The best part is, I don't care, because I'm at PEACE. Guest guest
Very lovely sideshows indeed! Another aspect of meditation is not to have expectations or cravings for special effects. Hard to do when you are seeing pretty lights, to not want more! I was reading a missive in the Yoga Sutras commentary by Swami Satchidananda about a meditation on the tip of the nose... done for some time in a concentrated fashion, you begin to smell a fragrant sweet smell! But he said, do not do it just to get the pretty smell, if you do there is no point to the meditation. The point is to train the mind, not get the goodies which result. The Sutras have a whole book on the siddhis, or powers which are gained by practicing the yoga path: Vibhuti Pada. It also warns the yogi not to be distracted or seduced by these powers, but just to recognize them and continue working. Guest guest
Sat Nam Elle Does this mean that all the "results" that are promised by the various kriya are part of the side show? So don't get distracted with the results although there are some predictable results??? All the claims that Kundalini yoga is so powerful could be self-defeating?? Alternatively, are we talking about various levels at which yoga is approached? Guest guest
Gian- I'm not qualified to defend what Elle and Brad have posted, they have much more experience that I do. But here's my own opinion. It depends on what you define as results. The 'results' of doing ky is not the sideshow that Elle and Brad are describing. The results, at least for me, is an inner feeling of peace and joy and love. A connection with all things. An inner contentment that allows me to keep life in perspective. The buzzing, colors, and other 'sideshow-type' sensations are things experienced with the physical body. And while they can be interesting and fun, experiencing those are not the focus of ky. The focus of ky, again as I understand it and have been practicing it, is to provide a spiritual path for growth/development of the soul. The side effects of this path are better physical condition, through the asana's and kriyas, as well as the strange feelings/sensations. But the real benefit is that of the inner soul/spirit. And it's benefits are not measured through physical sensations. So while some of the physical senstations experienced during and after ky can be amazing or exciting, the focus should remain on the inner soul. Even if a sadhana doesn't have any unusual or interesting physical sensations, it is still just as 'good' for the soul as when the physical sensations occur. I could be way off base here, but that's my own two cents worth. Hope that helps. Christa
Guest guest
Sat Nam Ellen! Well, I don't really know how to answer your questions! This thread started with a discussion about some random results of meditation, not necessarily specific kriyas... like seeing lights and colors, etc... which are neat-o, but not the reasons why we meditate. The Kundalini kriyas are designed to have specific effects on the body and its energy... that's not really what we were calling "sideshows"... Does that make sense? Or am I missing something?!!! Sorry! Oh, then I went on a tangent about the siddhis of yoga mentioned in the Yoga Sutras -- sorry again if this created some confusion. This is definitely a very advanced stage of Yoga! Guest guest
Dear Christa and All, an inner feeling of peace and joy and love. A > connection with all things. An inner contentment that allows me to keep life in perspective. provide a spiritual path for growth/development of the soul. You are right on. Well said. I would add that to achieve an experience of identity with the divine is a wonderful experience of our soul truth. It makes it possible to trust the unknown. When we can trust the unknown, we can live in peace. Sat Nam, Gururattan Kaur
