Guest guest
Hello all - I am just looking for a few suggestions for beginners. I am looking for a class right now in my area (Chicago), and in the meantime am trying to gather as much information as possible. I am 4 months pregnant, which I am sure makes some difference in the exercises (I know there is a correct word for this but I am not sure - I said I was a beginner! ) I would be able to do. I have a lot of meditation experience, I am a Tibetan Buddhist (Karma Kagyu), so that part is familiar to me. But sometimes familiarity with a style of meditation can be a hinderance instead of help... I guess what I am asking for is any suggestions for books or websites, also exercises (Maybe you can give me the right word) that I can safely practice while I am searching for my class. Maybe some "how I started stories" and how it has helped you....feel free to email me directly if all this will take up too much space on the list. My main purpose for beginning KY is that I have heard wonderful things about it. Being pregnant is an amazing spiritual journey for me and I am looking for a way to get even more in touch with...hm what? I don't know if I can describe accuratley. I have also suffered from depression throughout my life and am concerned that the hormones flowing through my body may make it worse. I want to find a natural way to alleviate this. Okay, thanks for your patience everyone! Amy Sherab Choekyid (my Buddhist spiritual name given to me when I took my refuge vows) Amy M. Guest guest
Hi Amy and welcome! :-) There are plenty of teachers in Chicago - I met several of them recently at Solstice Camp in NM. Go to kundalini yogalinks01.html Under the US flag near the bottom of the page you will find links to registered teachers by state. Regarding sites to find out more about Kundalini Yoga, then that same site will keep you going for quite some time. We have a section covering all the basics along with a spinal exercise set and also a beginners series of 25 lessons. Also, check out for books & videos for beginners plus a great range of meditation CDs. Hope you enjoy your time with us. Sat Nam! Guest guest
Sat (True) Nam (Name) Sherab, For starters here, for KY cert. teachers directory: http://www.kundaliniyoga.com/ and look for someone hopefully that also teaches pre-natal yoga, or get a referral. There's also at least a couple of manuals on pre-natal used in KY, I got 2 for my sister but don't recall the names. "a lot of meditation experience, I am a Tibetan Buddhist (Karma Kagyu), so that part is familiar to me. But sometimes familiarity with a style of meditation can be a hinderance instead of help" -- I occasionally do Vipassana, and find that if you have learned the art of 'concentration', that styles of meditation are not all that different. I began with a KY meditation called One-Minute-Breath, where you slow your breathing down to one breath per minute. When I experienced Vipassana for the first time I discovered a 'familiarity', I found watching my inhales and exhales to be alot like certain KY pranayam meditations. For depression there has been some posts you could probably look up in the archives, about '4 part/8 part' breath meditations but here's some links from our host's site - (Gururattan Kaur) kundalini yogakyt16.html (depression) kundalini yogakyt24.html (general intro) Blessings, and welcome! Guest guest
Sat Nam Amy! Gurmukh is supposed to have a good book on pre-natal KY. She may have a video on it too, but I'm not positive about that. I haven't used it myself, but I was reading some reviews for a friend.
