Guest guest
Sat Nam everyone! I have a confession to make. And it's probably going to sound REALLY silly to everyone. So please feel free to laugh, I won't be offended at all. I am self-admittadly just about as tone-deaf as one person can be. Has anyone ever seen 'My Best Friend's Wedding'? Do you know the scene with Cameron Diaz in the Karoake bar 'singing'? Well, suffice to say that, in that scene, she's a far better singer than I. You are probably now wondering 'what does this have to do with yoga?' When I started practicing KY, I would do meditation, but wouldn't chant outloud. The CDs really help me not only in the pronunciation, but in the 'tone or note' that each sound is chanted in. The books I had gave musical notes as well with the meditations, except that I can't read music at all. I have no idea what the symbols mean nor what tone each position on the scale means. The more I read about chanting and understood about how it was the vibrations of chanting certain words that impacted the body. I also thought this had to do with the tone that the words/notes were chanted in. I was honestly pretty stressed thinking 'ok, what about those of us who can't sing in tune at all?!' But, the past two months or so, I've thrown caution to the wind and have been chanting with the CDs, trying as best I can to stay 'in tune' with them. I began to feel vibrations in my body as I meditated, but usually I could only feel them when the words were also playing on the CD. Then last night, I was chanting Sa Ta Na Ma Ra Ma Da Sa. About half way through I could physically feel the vibrations, but what I was tickled to find out, was that I could feel them stronger when I was chanting, not just the CD. Imagine that, my body actually LIKES the sound of my voice when chanting?! I had to laugh at myself aftewards. I thought it was a pretty funny revelation. Guest guest
Gee, singing. I hear you, Christa (figuratively, that is). I've generally been uncomfortable and self conscious about my voice. When I first began chanting mantras last year, I always made sure I did it when no one else was home. Even so, I didn't like my own sound and some mantras simply felt unwieldy when I tried to pronounce them. Then I began to play with the sounds. I experimented with different degrees of openness and articulation in the form of my mouth and in pronunciation. I realized that I had been mumbling mantras, so tried to make each syllable strong and clear. I found websites with sound files to help with pronunciation, but also developed my own relationship to whatever mantra I was doing. Currently, I'm meditating with Adi Shakti Mantra (inspired to do so by Gururattan's rousing message earlier this month on how to develop genuine "supernatural powers"). I've experienced a point where the mantra's rhythm and character seem to emerge and carry me along. I haven't overcome all my self consciousness, but I've discovered a level of comfort with my own voice and an unexpected delight in chanting and singing. Guest guest
There are alot of websites out there that have Mantras on MP3 that are completely free to download, you may want to check them out Or maybe somebody in this group could even make a few MP3's for anyone who needs them. That would be a great idea for your guys website, is there already a part like that? I don't remember.. All are nothing. For when everything is nothing and nothing is everything, truly the truth is spoken. Truth is a lie, false is real when truth is unseen while lies influence reality; always.
