Greetings all!. I hope this will not be considered a pain but, as a new

r I'd like to post my introduction with a view to getting me

started in KY, so please be gentle with me! Firstly, just to get this out of

the way, can someone please let me know the meaning of Sat Nam?

I practise Hatha yoga pretty regularly and have done so for some years.

However, I'm not the saint I could be as I do drink (but not to excess) and

I also (god forbid!) smoke, but again, not excessively, just nocturnally

from time to time. Does anyone have views on these rather self gratifying

activities/habits? I have certainly wondered that maybe people tend to just

give these up when they pursue things like KY and other, dare I say

spiritually advanced practices.

Despite my bad habits I keep fit and love my yoga even to the point that

I've started "teaching" to a few friends to spread the word. I'm fascinated

by the idea of raising Kundalini energy but I'm rather sceptical; I trained

as a scientist you see. Despite my scientifc background I do try to have an

open mind about more metaphysical things and I'd really appreciate other's

input to get me started and, ideally, to give me some evidence/stories of

people's success. I live near Manchester, UK and I'd certainly be interested

in any groups nearby as I do believe these are the best way forward.

All the best.

Matt

P.S. What does Sat Nam mean?

Welcome to the board Matt!

I've been practicing ky for about 5 months now. I hadn't practiced

any other kind of yoga previously, so I couldn't give you a

comparison. However, there are others on the board who've done both

hatha and ky. Perhaps they could give you their opinion of the

differences they've noticed between the two styles.

As for giving up stuff when starting yoga. I hadn't even thought

about giving up anything before starting yoga. I just started with a

book I had purchsed (there are no classes near me to attend) about

twice a week. But I absolutely LOVED it. I soon increased my practice

to once or twice a day, every day. After the first 2-3 months, I

noticed I began to not really want to eat meat anymore. It started

with chicken, and then spread to other meats. I've been a vegetarian

now for about 2 months. I still 'do' eggs and milk. But I don't eat

any meat at all. And I don't view it as a sacrifice either. A

sacrifice implies that I want to eat something, but I 'deny' myself

the object. That's not the case at all. It was my body that just

started not really wanting to eat meat. I just listened to it.

In lieu of a formal class, this list has been a 'gold mine' of

information, feedback and support for me. So if you are unable to

find a class nearby, certainly don't despair. You can still practice

at home, like myself and several others on this list.

I see Brad already gave you the translation of Sat Nam. That confused

me at first as well. In the books I have, they translate it as "I am

Truth'. And use it as a mantra. But I've discovered it is used as a

salutation as well, like you'll see on the board.
