fingers and 'meanings'

Can someone explain what each finger 'means' in ky? I know each one

is associated to a planet (jupiter, mercury, etc) but I'm not clear

on what that actually means. I'm also not real clear on the

relationship between a mantra (like Sa Ta Na Ma) and touching

different fingers with each sound. I do it, but I don't understand

why it's done like that, versus just holding gyan mudra or some other

mudra throughout the mantra. I know the effects are different, but

why? How does change a finger alter the effect of a mantra?
